World of Warcraft: Forever Is Free to Play on 19 October — How to Join the Stress Test
Blizzard is opening the gates of Azeroth to everyone on 19 October 2026. The World of Warcraft: Forever stress test is free to join, and no World of Warcraft subscription, paid Game Time, beta invitation or purchase is required. Here is everything UK players need to know.

When is the free WoW: Forever stress test?
The stress test begins on Monday, 19 October 2026, at 18:00 BST in the United Kingdom (19:00 CEST in mainland Europe). Blizzard expects the test to last several hours, although it may end earlier or continue longer depending on server conditions. The regular beta will briefly go offline before the event.
How to play for free
Open the Battle.net desktop application, update it if prompted, and select World of Warcraft. From the Game Version menu above Play, choose World of Warcraft: Forever Stress Test under In Development. Install the client, then select Play when the servers open. Choose an available test realm and create a new character.
You do not need an active subscription, Game Time, a beta key or an invitation to take part. Your stress-test characters, names and guilds will be wiped when the event ends; this is a temporary server test rather than a head start on launch progression.
What is World of Warcraft: Forever?
WoW: Forever is Blizzard's new permanent reimagining of original Azeroth, designed to run alongside modern World of Warcraft and WoW Classic. It revisits Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor with familiar environments, new storylines and experiences, a level cap of 60, and an emphasis on exploration and community. Blizzard says the game will continue receiving updates.
Do you need to buy WoW: Forever at launch?
The global launch is scheduled for 4 November 2026 at 23:00 GMT in the UK (3:00 p.m. PST). The base experience is included in an active World of Warcraft subscription or paid Game Time, so a separate Forever upgrade is not mandatory. However, continued play after the free stress test is not free: players will need subscription time or another qualifying access offer.
Optional upgrades, including the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection, provide extra benefits. Some features, such as the Skyborne race and its starting experience, require an eligible upgrade.
Could friends play free during launch week?
Blizzard also announced Invite-A-Friend Launch Codes for eligible invitees. These grant access from 4–11 November 2026 and are supplied with qualifying purchases; distribution is due to start on 20 October. This is a restricted invitation offer, not an unconditional public free-to-play launch week.
What happens next?
The stress test is on 19 October, the last full day of beta testing is 21 October, early name reservation for qualifying upgrade owners opens 27 October, and WoW: Forever launches globally on 4 November. For returning adventurers and newcomers alike, the free stress test is the simplest opportunity to try this reinterpretation of Azeroth without spending money.
New Format verdict
A free, no-invitation stress test removes the usual barrier to trying a subscription MMORPG. Expect queues and technical interruptions: the primary goal is to test server capacity, not to provide a polished long-form trial. If you enjoy the experience, check whether your existing WoW subscription already covers the November launch before purchasing an optional edition.
