PURPLE by NCSOFT: Could This Korean Gaming Platform Challenge Steam?
Steam has dominated PC game distribution for years, while Epic Games Store, GOG and publisher-specific launchers offer alternatives. One platform that deserves closer examination is PURPLE, developed by South Korean games company NCSOFT.
Originally launched as a cross-play service in 2019, PURPLE has evolved into a wider PC gaming ecosystem. Its expansion into third-party distribution in September 2024 raises an interesting question: could it become a meaningful alternative to Steam?
From MMORPG launcher to gaming platform
PURPLE was created to connect NCSOFT's PC and mobile game communities. The company expanded the platform's distribution business on 10 September 2024, including selected PC titles from external publishers.
Sony Interactive Entertainment was PURPLE's first announced third-party distribution partner. Titles named at the time included Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The announcement explicitly concerned South Korea and did not establish worldwide availability.
What does PURPLE offer?
PURPLE Store: a storefront and launcher for supported NCSOFT titles and selected third-party PC games, with availability varying by region.
PURPLE Talk: text and voice communications designed to help gaming communities coordinate their activities.
PURPLE Live: gameplay-sharing features for supported use cases, connecting play with communication.
PURPLE On: remote access to supported games running on a user's own PC. This differs from GeForce NOW, which runs compatible games on cloud-hosted machines.
PURPLE versus Steam
Steam has a much larger established global catalogue, user reviews, social features, the Workshop ecosystem, regular sales and extensive publisher relationships. PURPLE's proposition is more specialised, particularly for players already involved with NCSOFT MMORPG communities.
Both combine game access and social functions, but it would be misleading to describe PURPLE today as a full worldwide replacement for Steam. Content, operating-system compatibility and service support depend on territory and individual game.
What about cloud saves and achievements?
In September 2024, NCSOFT announced cloud saves and an achievement system as part of PURPLE's expansion. Players should verify which functions are currently supported for the individual games they intend to use.
What can gaming creators learn from PURPLE?
The distinctive idea behind PURPLE is the combination of game distribution, chat, community interaction and gameplay sharing. For streamers, journalists and gaming communities, this points toward a future in which more of the gaming workflow is integrated directly into the platform.
However, built-in gameplay sharing is not a substitute for a full production environment with advanced audio routing, scene switching, editing and broadcast automation.
Could PURPLE expand internationally?
An international push would require regional publishing agreements, local payments, platform compatibility, multilingual customer support and sustained developer partnerships. The South Korea-only Sony arrangement illustrates why a major publisher partnership does not automatically translate into global game access.
New Format verdict
PURPLE is an interesting PC gaming ecosystem rather than a demonstrated Steam replacement. Its strength lies in bringing MMORPG-focused communities, communication and access together. Whether it evolves into a stronger international store will depend on the quality of its catalogue, service availability and publishing relationships.
PURPLE's story is ultimately about a wider industry trend: gaming platforms increasingly aim to become connected destinations for play, communication and content creation.
