🧙 WARLOCK: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS — FIRST GAMEPLAY REVEALED AT GAMESCOM 2026

🧙 WARLOCK: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS — MAGIC BECOMES THE ULTIMATE WEAPON AT GAMESCOM 2026
Darkon is waiting. And Kaatri is about to break the rules of magic.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios finally presented the first substantial gameplay footage of Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons — an original third-person, single-player action-adventure set in a dark fantasy open world inspired by D&D.
The approximately eight-minute gameplay reveal goes far beyond a conventional cinematic trailer. It demonstrates how magic, exploration, environmental manipulation and melee combat work together to create different solutions to the same problem.
🧙 MEET KAATRI
The game puts players in control of Kaatri, a veteran weapons master who enters into a dangerous pact with Tasha, gaining access to otherworldly magic.
Kaatri isn’t a traditional wizard.
She already knows how to fight with conventional weapons, and her new magical abilities are integrated directly into her combat style.
The result is a character who can move between:
⚔️ Melee combat
✨ Spellcasting
🧩 Environmental manipulation
🛡️ Defensive abilities
🌑 Forbidden magic
rather than choosing between a purely magical or purely physical approach.
🧙♀️ TASHA ENTERS THE STORY
One of the biggest revelations in the Gamescom gameplay trailer is Tasha, portrayed by Maggie Robertson.
Tasha becomes Kaatri’s patron and the source of her magical power.
She teaches Kaatri to sense Raw Magic — a mysterious energy hidden throughout the world of Darkon that allows her abilities to evolve and transform.
The relationship between the two characters appears to be an important part of the story.
Kaatri needs Tasha’s power.
But entering a pact with a powerful magical entity inevitably comes with consequences.
⚡ RAW MAGIC
The gameplay reveal introduces one of the game’s central mechanics:
RAW MAGIC
Kaatri can detect magical energy hidden within the environment.
This isn’t simply a resource used to cast spells.
It becomes a way of interacting with the world.
Magic can be used to:
✨ Open new paths
🧩 Manipulate objects
🚪 Overcome obstacles
⚔️ Create combat opportunities
🌪️ Change environmental conditions
🔎 Discover alternative solutions
The official description emphasises that spells can interact with one another, meaning players aren’t necessarily expected to solve every situation in one predetermined way.
🌍 MAGIC CHANGES THE WORLD
This is arguably the most interesting part of the Gamescom footage.
Magic isn’t just something Kaatri throws at enemies.
The environment itself becomes part of the spell system.
The gameplay shows Kaatri manipulating objects and using magical abilities to change the way she moves through the world.
A spell that might appear defensive in one situation could potentially become an exploration tool somewhere else.
The developers are building the game around experimentation and player creativity.
🌪️ EVEN THE WEATHER CAN BECOME A WEAPON
One of the more unusual mechanics shown in the footage is weather manipulation.
Kaatri can alter environmental conditions and use them to create tactical advantages.
That means combat isn’t necessarily limited to:
PLAYER → ENEMY
Instead, encounters can become:
PLAYER → MAGIC → ENVIRONMENT → ENEMY
The weather, positioning and surrounding environment can all become part of the strategy.
⚔️ MAGIC + MELEE
Kaatri isn’t standing at a distance and simply throwing spells.
She’s a trained weapons master.
The trailer shows her combining magical abilities with close-quarters combat, creating a much more physical combat system than the name Warlock might initially suggest.
She can summon otherworldly melee weapons, each with its own powers and tactical applications.
SPELL → WEAPON → COMBO → FINISH
This combination is one of the defining elements of the gameplay reveal.
🧩 THERE ISN’T JUST ONE SOLUTION
The game’s design philosophy becomes particularly clear when looking at how Kaatri approaches obstacles.
Instead of giving players a single button prompt, Warlock encourages experimentation.
A problem might be solved through:
✨ A spell
⚔️ A weapon
🌪️ Environmental manipulation
🧙 A combination of abilities
🧠 Simply finding another route
The developers describe the game as systems-driven, meaning players can discover solutions that aren’t necessarily explicitly presented to them.
👹 DARKON
The adventure takes place in Darkon, a dark fantasy world inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Darkon is associated with the Ravenloft / Domains of Dread side of D&D, giving the game a considerably darker atmosphere than the traditional high-fantasy image many players associate with the franchise.
The trailer shows:
🌲 Dark forests
🏚️ Gothic settlements
🌫️ Mysterious landscapes
👹 Monstrous creatures
✨ Magical environments
⚠️ Dangerous supernatural locations
The world is designed around exploration rather than simply moving from one combat arena to another.
👁️ A BEHOLDER APPEARS
The Gamescom footage also gives us a glimpse at one of the most recognisable creatures in D&D:
THE BEHOLDER
The encounter demonstrates that the game isn’t shy about bringing iconic D&D creatures into its real-time action system.
Instead of encountering them through a traditional tabletop ruleset, players have to physically navigate the battlefield and respond to their abilities in real time.
🧙 FORBIDDEN MAGIC
Kaatri’s arsenal goes beyond conventional spells.
The game introduces:
✨ Spells
📜 Rituals
🌑 Forbidden magic
⚔️ Magical weapons
Each ability can potentially interact with another.
This gives Warlock an almost experimental quality:
What happens if I combine these two abilities?
That question appears to be central to the experience.
🎮 A TRUE SINGLE-PLAYER ADVENTURE
Unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, this isn’t a party-based CRPG.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is a third-person single-player action-adventure.
The focus is firmly on Kaatri and her relationship with Tasha, while exploration and combat take place directly from a third-person perspective.
🎬 THE GAMESCOM 2026 GAMEPLAY REVEAL
The Gamescom presentation finally answers the biggest question surrounding Warlock:
What does it actually play like?
The answer appears to be a combination of:
D&D + third-person action + immersive-sim-style systems + supernatural exploration.
The official reveal demonstrates:
🧙 Kaatri’s magical abilities
🧙♀️ Tasha
⚡ Raw Magic
⚔️ Melee combat
✨ Spell combinations
🌪️ Weather manipulation
🧩 Environmental puzzles
👹 Monsters
👁️ Beholders
🌍 Exploration across Darkon
🔥 WHY WARLOCK COULD BE DIFFERENT
The D&D name alone isn’t what makes this game interesting.
It’s the freedom built into its magic system.
Rather than treating magic as a collection of cooldown-based attacks, Invoke Studios is designing spells as tools that can affect:
COMBAT
EXPLORATION
PUZZLES
THE ENVIRONMENT
THE WEATHER
That could make every encounter feel less scripted and more experimental.

🧙 MAGIC HAS NO RULEBOOK
The Gamescom 2026 gameplay reveal has finally shown what Invoke Studios has been building.
Kaatri isn’t simply learning spells.
She’s learning how to bend the world around her.
A wall can become an obstacle.
Or an opportunity.
An enemy can be a threat.
Or a tool.
The weather can be background scenery.
Or a weapon.
And every spell can potentially lead to another solution.
WARLOCK: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS
⚡ Master Raw Magic.
⚔️ Combine magic and melee.
🌪️ Manipulate the environment.
👹 Face the creatures of Darkon.
🧙 Discover what lies beyond the Mists.
