🧙 THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT — SONGS OF THE PAST REVEALED AT GAMESCOM 2026

CD PROJEKT RED brought one of the biggest surprises of Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a brand-new expansion for the legendary RPG.
The expansion received its first official teaser during the showcase, with Geralt returning for a completely new adventure.
⚔️ GERALT RETURNS
More than a decade after the original The Witcher 3, CD PROJEKT RED is bringing Geralt of Rivia back for another major story.
The new expansion introduces:
⚔️ A completely new adventure
🗺️ A new map region
👹 New monsters
🗡️ A new weapon
🎬 A new storyline
🧙 Geralt returning as the protagonist
The Gamescom footage showed Geralt using a new chain-whip-style weapon, giving players a glimpse of a different approach to combat.
🌍 A NEW REGION TO EXPLORE
One of the biggest attractions of Songs of the Past is a completely new area of the Witcher world.
CD PROJEKT RED’s level design team explained during Gamescom that the expansion is intended to feel like a genuine new chapter rather than simply another quest added to the existing map.
Players can expect:
🌲 New environments
🏰 New locations
👹 New creatures
🧩 New quests
⚔️ New encounters
🐺 NEW MONSTERS
Geralt’s return also means new contracts.
The Gamescom presentation teased new monsters and enemies that Geralt will have to investigate and hunt.
As with the original game, preparation is expected to remain an important part of combat:
Investigate → Identify the monster → Prepare → Hunt.
🗡️ A NEW WEAPON FOR GERALT
One of the most noticeable moments in the trailer was Geralt wielding a chain-based weapon.
The weapon provides a completely different combat animation and opens up new possibilities for Geralt’s fighting style.
It is one of the clearest indications that CD PROJEKT RED isn’t simply recycling the original game’s combat system.
🎬 A NEW STORY FROM THE WITCHER 3 ERA
The expansion is designed as one final new story within The Witcher 3, with members of the original development team returning to work on it.
CD PROJEKT RED’s Miles Tost, Level Design Lead, discussed the creation of the expansion during Opening Night Live.
For longtime fans, that makes the project particularly significant.
It isn’t a new Witcher game.
It is a new adventure inside the world of The Witcher 3.
🖥️ THE WITCHER 3 REMASTERED ALSO ANNOUNCED
CD PROJEKT RED had another major surprise.
Alongside Songs of the Past, the studio announced a new The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered update.
The remaster introduces improvements including:
✨ Enhanced visuals
⚔️ Improved combat
🏃 Improved movement
👹 Better monster behaviour
📸 Photo Mode improvements
Most importantly, the remaster will be available as a free upgrade for existing owners and is scheduled for 29 September 2026.
📅 RELEASE WINDOW
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past is currently planned for 2027.
The exact release date has not yet been announced.
Meanwhile, The Witcher 3 Remastered arrives on 29 September 2026 as a free upgrade.
🔥 WHY THIS IS HUGE
Few games from the 2010s have remained as influential as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The announcement of a completely new expansion more than a decade after the original release is therefore one of the biggest surprises of Gamescom 2026.
And the combination of:
GERALT + NEW REGION + NEW MONSTERS + NEW WEAPON + NEW STORY
makes Songs of the Past one of the most anticipated RPG expansions currently announced.
🐺 THE WHITE WOLF RETURNS
Geralt’s story isn’t finished yet.
After years of waiting, players will once again be able to step into the boots of the White Wolf and explore a completely new chapter of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
⚔️ A new hunt begins.
