Warcraft III: The Price of Survival — Our Original Custom Campaign, Novel and New Story of Azeroth

The Price of Survival is one of the most ambitious story-driven projects we have created around the world of Warcraft III. What began as an idea for a custom Warcraft III campaign gradually evolved into something much larger: a complete original storyline featuring new heroes, new factions, a campaign world map, moral choices, alternative endings, gameplay systems and a novella telling the story from the perspective of its main characters.
We did not want to create just another collection of custom maps.
Our goal was to design something that could feel like a complete narrative expansion to the classic Warcraft III experience.
At the centre of the campaign is one simple question:
What are we willing to sacrifice in order to survive?
Azeroth Begins to Remember
The story of The Price of Survival takes place after countless wars have already pushed Azeroth to the edge of destruction.
The Burning Legion.
The Scourge.
The fall of Lordaeron.
The destruction of Quel’Thalas.
The wars between the Horde and the Alliance.
Azeroth survived all of them.
But beneath the surface of the world, something has remained hidden for thousands of years.
Something its people were never meant to discover.
The Vault of Echoes
The Vault of Echoes is an ancient Titan structure designed as an enormous archive.
Its original purpose was to preserve the memory of Azeroth.
Cities.
Civilisations.
Armies.
Battles.
People.
Magic.
Entire moments in history.
The problem begins when the system reaches a new conclusion:
preserving memory is no longer enough.
The Vault begins physically restoring the past.
The Restoration
The process becomes known as:
THE RESTORATION
At first, the anomalies are small.
A village destroyed decades ago suddenly exists again.
Its inhabitants are alive.
Children play in the streets.
Guards patrol the gates.
Families continue their daily lives.
None of them know that they ever died.
Then entire cities begin to return.
Lordaeron.
Quel’Thalas.
Ancient regions of Ashenvale.
Forgotten armies.
Lost battlefields.
But the Restoration comes with a price.
Every time part of the past is restored, part of the present begins to disappear.
The world cannot sustain both versions of history at the same time.
The Curator
At the centre of the crisis is an entity known as:
The Curator
The Curator is not a traditional villain.
It does not want to destroy Azeroth.
Quite the opposite.
It wants to save it.
After observing thousands of years of warfare, destruction and repeating conflict, the Curator reaches a terrifying conclusion:
Mortal civilisation will eventually destroy itself.
Its solution is therefore simple.
Remove the most dangerous element from Azeroth.
The future.
If a perfect version of the past can be preserved forever, then the world will never have to face uncertainty again.
This becomes the central philosophical conflict of the story.
Is a safe, perfectly preserved past worth more than an unpredictable future?
The Heroes of The Price of Survival
The campaign follows several characters from different factions of Azeroth.
Each of them has a reason to stop the Vault of Echoes.
But each also has a reason to accept what it offers.
Kaelen Dawnstrider
Kaelen Dawnstrider is a Human Rune Knight and the main protagonist of the campaign.
A former military commander, Kaelen lost most of his soldiers during an earlier conflict.
The Vault offers him something no living person could possibly offer.
The return of every soldier he lost.
His story becomes a conflict between honouring the dead and protecting those who are still alive.
Lyria Nightsong
Lyria Nightsong is a Night Elf Warden.
She is one of the first heroes to discover that different versions of the same place can exist simultaneously.
In Ashenvale, she sees an ancient version of the forest.
Untouched.
Uncorrupted.
Unscarred by centuries of war.
More beautiful than the world she knows.
Lyria is forced to confront a difficult question.
Does the present really have a greater right to exist simply because it came later?
Varek Graveborn
Varek Graveborn is a Forsaken Necromancer and one of the most tragic characters in the campaign.
As the Restoration spreads through Lordaeron, the ruins begin changing into the kingdom that existed before the Plague.
Forsaken disappear.
Living humans return.
Varek sees his old home.
His family.
And even a living version of himself.
For the first time since becoming undead, he is confronted with the possibility of truly becoming human again.
Brannik Gearspark
Brannik Gearspark is a Gnome engineer.
At first, the Vault of Echoes appears to be the greatest technological discovery of his life.
Ancient Titan machinery could potentially transform Azeroth.
But Brannik gradually realises that technology without morality can become just as dangerous as any weapon.
His role also makes him essential to understanding how the Vault works and how it might eventually be stopped.
Seraphine Bloodveil
Seraphine Bloodveil is a San’layn Blood Mage.
The Restoration allows her to see Quel’Thalas before its destruction.
The Sunwell shines once again.
The kingdom is alive.
Her people have not yet suffered the catastrophe that permanently changed them.
Seraphine must decide whether restoring the perfect past of her people is worth destroying the world that exists now.
Elara Veil
Elara Veil is the most mysterious character in the campaign.
She can manipulate memory and illusion.
From the beginning, she appears unusually resistant to the effects of the Vault.
Eventually, the heroes discover why.
There are no historical records confirming that Elara ever existed.
Because Elara never lived outside the Vault.
She is a memory.
A synthetic consciousness created by the system itself.
This revelation becomes one of the central twists of the entire story.
A Campaign of Ten Chapters
The Price of Survival is designed as a full Warcraft III custom campaign consisting of:
Prologue + 10 Chapters + Epilogue
Each mission has a different gameplay identity.
Prologue — The Village That Wasn’t There
Kaelen discovers a village that was destroyed twenty-seven years earlier.
The inhabitants believe Lordaeron still exists and that Prince Arthas has only recently travelled to Northrend.
This is the player’s first encounter with the Restoration.
Chapter I — Echoes in Ashenvale
Lyria investigates a region of Ashenvale where the modern forest begins overlapping with its ancient form.
This chapter introduces one of the campaign’s most important mechanics:
Memory Shift
Chapter II — The Dead Remember
The ruins of Lordaeron begin changing back into a living kingdom.
Forsaken disappear.
Humans appear in their place.
For Varek, the Restoration becomes deeply personal.
Chapter III — Machines Beneath the World
Kaelen and Brannik descend into an ancient Titan complex.
For the first time, they learn the truth about the Vault of Echoes and the purpose behind the Restoration.
Chapter IV — The Kingdom That Returned
The entire Capital City of Lordaeron returns.
Thousands of citizens live normal lives.
They do not know what the future holds.
To stop the Restoration, the heroes must destroy the mechanism keeping the city alive.
That means knowingly erasing thousands of people who believe they are real.
This becomes one of the most important moral turning points of the campaign.
Chapter V — Blood of the Past
Ancient Quel’Thalas returns.
Seraphine is offered everything her people lost.
The player is forced to choose whether to defend the restored kingdom or begin destroying its Restoration Anchors.
This choice later affects dialogue, reinforcements and parts of the final campaign.
Chapter VI — War of Memories
History begins to collapse into itself.
Armies from different eras appear on the same battlefield.
Lordaeron soldiers.
The Old Horde.
The Scourge.
Ancient Night Elves.
The Burning Legion.
Every army believes it is fighting its own war.
The result is complete chaos.
Chapter VII — The Forgotten Army
The Curator begins to adapt.
It no longer simply copies history.
It starts creating something new.
The Eternal Host
The Eternal Host combines the strongest warriors, technologies and combat styles preserved within the Vault.
The Curator is no longer rebuilding the past.
It is designing its own future.
Chapter VIII — What We Lost
This is the most psychological chapter of the campaign.
Each hero is given their perfect world.
Kaelen receives his dead soldiers back.
Varek sees his family again.
Seraphine returns to the old Quel’Thalas.
Lyria sees an Ashenvale untouched by war.
Brannik enters a world where technology has solved hunger, disease and conflict.
Only Elara receives nothing.
Because she has no real past.
This is the chapter where she finally learns the truth about herself.
Chapter IX — The Last World
The Restoration reaches a global level.
Entire regions begin changing.
Past and present exist simultaneously.
Historical kingdoms reappear.
Modern settlements vanish.
The heroes launch a final offensive toward the Vault of Echoes.
Chapter X — The Price of Survival
All six heroes enter the heart of the Vault.
The Curator waits for them inside.
During the final battle, the arena constantly changes between different versions of Azeroth.
Lordaeron.
Ashenvale.
Quel’Thalas.
Icecrown.
Titan facilities.
Burning Legion battlefields.
History itself becomes part of the boss fight.
After defeating the Curator, the player must decide the future of the Vault.
Three Endings
The campaign features three possible endings.
Destroy the Past
The Vault is destroyed.
The Restoration ends permanently.
However, the magical energy released by the destruction devastates parts of Azeroth.
The world regains its future.
But at a terrible cost.
The Eternal Guardian
The Vault is stabilised instead of destroyed.
However, it requires a permanent conscious guardian.
Varek volunteers.
He remains inside the Vault forever, watching over every memory Azeroth has ever created.
Memory Preserved — The True Ending
The secret ending requires the player to collect:
10 Echo Shards
These hidden fragments reveal the truth behind Elara’s creation.
Using the complete Echo sequence, Elara discovers that the Vault does not need to recreate the past physically.
It can simply preserve it.
The Restoration can be stopped without destroying the archive.
But someone must permanently merge with the Archive Core.
Elara accepts the role.
The Restoration Zones disappear.
The dead return to memory.
The present survives.
And the future becomes unknown once again.
Memory Shift — The Core Gameplay Mechanic
One of the most important mechanics of The Price of Survival is:
MEMORY SHIFT
Certain parts of the map can be switched between different historical states.
For example:
In the present, a bridge has been destroyed.
The player activates Memory Shift.
In the past, the bridge still exists.
The heroes cross it.
Then the player returns to the present.
This mechanic can be used for:
exploration,
puzzles,
secret routes,
boss fights,
hidden items,
environmental storytelling,
alternative objectives,
access to Echo Shards.
Memory Shift is designed to make the story directly influence gameplay rather than exist only through cinematics and dialogue.
Echo Shards
Ten hidden Echo Shards are scattered across the campaign.
Each one contains part of the Vault’s history.
More importantly, they reveal fragments of Elara’s origin.
The player gradually learns that multiple versions of Elara may have existed before the one who escaped the system.
Only after collecting all ten Echo Shards can the player unlock the complete truth.
And the true ending.
From Custom Campaign to Novel
At a certain point, we realised that the campaign alone was not enough.
The story offered too many opportunities for deeper character development.
That is why the project also became:
The Price of Survival — The Novel
The novella expands the campaign’s story from the perspective of the heroes themselves.
It allows us to explore their memories, fears, internal conflicts and relationships in much greater detail than would normally be possible within an RTS campaign.
Particularly important are the stories of:
Kaelen and his fallen soldiers,
Varek and his family,
Seraphine and the old Quel’Thalas,
Lyria and the changing Ashenvale,
Brannik and the moral limits of Titan technology,
and Elara, who gradually discovers that her entire identity was created inside the Vault.
The Campaign Bible
The entire project has also been organised into a complete Campaign Bible.
It includes:
the full story concept,
the history of the Vault of Echoes,
the Curator,
six main heroes,
playable factions,
enemy factions,
the campaign world map,
ten chapters,
mission objectives,
bosses,
relics,
Echo Shards,
Memory Shift,
moral choices,
hero progression,
multiple endings,
and a production structure for Warcraft III World Editor.
This means The Price of Survival is no longer simply an idea.
It is now a structured game project.
Why The Price of Survival?
The most important theme of the story is not war.
It is memory.
Warcraft has always been a universe shaped by the consequences of previous conflicts.
We wanted to ask a different question.
What if everything that was lost could truly be restored?
Not simply rebuilt.
Actually restored.
The cities.
The people.
Their memories.
Their emotions.
Their lives.
Would they still only be copies?
And if a restored person can think, love, fear and understand death, do we still have the right to erase them?
That is the real meaning behind the title:
The Price of Survival
What Comes Next?
The Price of Survival now has the foundations needed for much larger development.
Possible next stages include:
expanding the novella into a full-length novel,
designing every faction unit and building,
creating hero portraits,
producing concept art,
creating cinematics,
recording voice dialogue,
composing original music,
designing loading screens,
building Warcraft III World Editor maps,
implementing the Memory Shift system,
developing complete .w3x missions,
and ultimately producing a fully playable custom campaign.
The goal is not to create only a collection of maps.
The goal is to create an original story in the spirit of the classic Warcraft III campaigns.
A story about war.
Loss.
Memory.
Identity.
And the idea that sometimes the greatest respect we can show the past is not to bring it back.
But to allow the future to exist.
