ONIMUSHA: WAY OF THE SWORD — THE SAMURAI RETURNS
Capcom Expands the Demo and Unleashes New Gameplay at Gamescom 2026
Cologne, Germany — August 25, 2026
The Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live Pre-Show entered its penultimate chapter with the return of one of Capcom’s most recognisable action franchises.
The fourteenth title presented during the showcase was:
ONIMUSHA: WAY OF THE SWORD
Rather than simply showing another cinematic trailer, Capcom used the Gamescom appearance to highlight new gameplay and announce an expanded demo, giving players a larger taste of the upcoming sword-fighting adventure.
And at the centre of the experience is one of Japan’s most legendary warriors:
MIYAMOTO MUSASHI.
⚔️ THE FOURTEENTH GAME OF THE PRE-SHOW
Onimusha: Way of the Sword was the 14th title shown during the Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live Pre-Show.
It arrived immediately after Age Twisters, shifting the presentation from cooperative family adventure to brutal supernatural sword combat.
The timing was significant.
With only one title remaining after Onimusha, Capcom used the penultimate slot to showcase a major upcoming release rather than another brand-new announcement.
🗡️ MIYAMOTO MUSASHI RETURNS
The protagonist of Way of the Sword is Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary Japanese swordsman.
But this is not a conventional historical interpretation.
Musashi finds himself in an alternate version of early Edo-period Kyoto, where the city has been invaded by supernatural creatures known as:
GENMA
The result is a combination of historical Japan and dark supernatural fantasy.
🏯 KYOTO UNDER SIEGE
The game takes place in early Edo-period Kyoto.
Capcom has worked extensively to recreate the historical atmosphere of the city, including locations inspired by real temples, streets and traditional architecture.
The development team worked with the City of Kyoto during production to achieve a high level of historical detail. (PlayStation.Blog)
That creates an interesting contrast.
On one side:
Historic Kyoto.
On the other:
Demons emerging from Hell.
👹 THE GENMA
The supernatural enemies invading Kyoto are known as Genma.
According to the game’s mythology, Genma emerge from Hell through portals created when Malice overwhelms the human world.
Standing against them are the Oni, supernatural beings whose purpose is to protect these gateways.
Musashi becomes caught between these opposing forces.
The result is a story that combines Japanese history with mythology and dark fantasy. (PlayStation.Blog)
🔥 THE ONI AWAKENING
One of the most important moments shown in the new Gamescom footage was Musashi’s Oni Awakening.
This ability allows him to release the supernatural power contained within him and dramatically increase his combat capabilities.
It gives Musashi an entirely different level of strength when facing particularly dangerous enemies.
The Gamescom trailer specifically highlighted this transformation alongside new opponents. (PlayStation.Blog)
⚔️ THE ART OF THE SWORD
Sword combat is the foundation of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
The game is designed around fast, violent and highly precise encounters.
Musashi can attack enemies from different angles while using defensive movements and special techniques to create openings.
The objective isn’t simply to hit an enemy repeatedly.
It’s about reading the opponent.
Finding the right moment.
And striking with precision.
🩸 DYNAMIC DISMEMBERMENT
One of the game’s most technically distinctive combat systems is:
Dynamic Dismemberment
Enemies can be physically sliced along the exact trajectory of Musashi’s sword.
This isn’t simply a visual effect.
It is designed to make every successful strike feel more physical and responsive.
Capcom describes the system as an important part of recreating the visceral swordplay that has traditionally defined the Onimusha franchise. (PlayStation.Blog)
⚡ BREAK ISSEN
The classic Issen technique also returns in a new form.
Traditionally, Issen required extremely precise timing.
Way of the Sword introduces Break Issen, which can be triggered after completely depleting an enemy’s Stamina Gauge.
This gives players a more accessible route to performing one of the franchise’s signature attacks.
It also creates another tactical layer during combat:
Drain stamina → create an opening → unleash Break Issen.
👹 NEW THREATS
The Gamescom presentation also showed Musashi confronting new supernatural enemies.
The expanded demo gives players the opportunity to experience more of these encounters rather than simply watching them in a trailer.
That makes the Gamescom update particularly valuable for players who want to test the combat system themselves.
🐉 DAIDARA — A NEW BOSS
The biggest addition to the demo is the massive Genma boss:
DAIDARA
The updated demo allows players to confront this enormous enemy.
This provides a much more substantial challenge than the original version of the trial.
The additional content also expands the playable area and introduces new gameplay mechanics. (PlayStation.Blog)
🌑 THE ONI REFUGE
The expanded demo also introduces a second quest set in the:
ONI REFUGE
This new area provides a larger section of gameplay and gives players a better understanding of the game’s exploration, combat and supernatural systems.
For players who already completed the original demo, this update offers a genuine reason to return.
🎮 THE DEMO IS NOW BIGGER
The original demo was released in June 2026.
Gamescom brought a substantial update.
Players can now experience:
A new quest
The Oni Refuge
New gameplay mechanics
A major boss encounter
Expanded exploration
Additional combat encounters
The demo is available across the game’s supported platforms, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also introduced alongside the expanded content. (Gematsu)
🎭 TOSHIRO MIFUNE AS MUSASHI
One of the most unusual aspects of Way of the Sword is the visual representation of Musashi.
The character’s face is based on legendary Japanese actor:
TOSHIRO MIFUNE
Mifune famously portrayed numerous samurai characters during his career.
Capcom worked with Mifune Productions to recreate his likeness for the game.
The developers have described the process as particularly challenging because Mifune could not be scanned directly, requiring extensive reference material and collaboration. (PlayStation.Blog)
The result gives Musashi a distinctive cinematic presence.
🏯 HISTORICAL AUTHENTICITY
Capcom has taken considerable care with the game’s environments.
The team worked with historical references and collaborated with Kyoto to reproduce details of real locations.
According to the developers, even architectural elements such as the number of wooden pillars supporting structures at Kiyomizu-dera were carefully researched.
At the same time, the game deliberately incorporates supernatural elements that obviously never existed in historical Kyoto.
This combination is central to the game’s identity:
Real history.
Supernatural fiction.
🎧 SOUND OF KYOTO
The atmosphere isn’t being created visually alone.
Capcom recorded acoustic information inside real Japanese temples and historic residences to reproduce the distinctive sound of traditional architecture.
The game also uses 3D audio to position sounds vertically, including flying Genma and collapsing structures.
The goal is to make Kyoto feel like a physical space rather than simply a background. (PlayStation.Blog)
🎮 PLAYSTATION 5 IMMERSION
On PS5, the game also makes extensive use of the DualSense controller.
Haptic feedback is used for:
Weapon strikes
Massive Genma
Soul absorption
Environmental effects
Cutscene audio
Adaptive triggers are also used when drawing the bowstring and when sealing supernatural portals.
The result is intended to make combat and supernatural abilities physically noticeable through the controller. (PlayStation.Blog)
📅 RELEASE DATE
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled to launch on:
SEPTEMBER 25, 2026
The game is coming to:
PlayStation 5
Xbox Series X|S
PC
The release is therefore only weeks away from the Gamescom presentation.
🧪 WHY THE EXPANDED DEMO MATTERS
The expanded demo is arguably more important than the trailer itself.
Sword-based action games live or die by their combat systems.
A trailer can demonstrate spectacular attacks.
A demo lets players answer the real question:
Does the swordplay actually feel good?
With the expanded Oni Refuge section and the Daidara boss fight, players can now experience a much larger portion of the game before release.

🔥 OUR TAKE
Onimusha: Way of the Sword may be one of the most technically impressive games in the entire Pre-Show lineup.
The combination of:
Historical Kyoto
●
Samurai combat
●
Japanese mythology
●
Dynamic dismemberment
●
Supernatural powers
gives the game a very strong identity.
But the most important thing is that Capcom is allowing players to try the combat before launch.
The expanded demo — particularly the Daidara boss encounter — should provide a much clearer indication of whether the new Onimusha can deliver the precise, visceral swordplay that fans expect from the series.
