MURALS — A NEW WORLD TAKES SHAPE
The Tenth Game of the Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live Pre-Show
Cologne, Germany — August 25, 2026
The Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live Pre-Show reached its tenth title with the reveal of a completely new project:
MURALS
After the intense action of Valor Mortis and the chaotic tank combat of Tank Rat, the presentation shifted once again, introducing a game that immediately stood apart through its distinctive artistic identity.
Murals was presented with a Reveal Trailer, confirming the project as one of the new titles forming the second half of the 15-game Pre-Show lineup. (PC Gamer)
🎨 THE TENTH GAME OF THE PRE-SHOW
The appearance of Murals marked the beginning of the final six games shown before the main Opening Night Live presentation.
The first nine titles had already taken viewers through an extraordinary range of genres:
Worms: Galactic Tactics
Train Sim World 7
RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks
Aniimo
Genigods: Nezha
Perceptum
Acornia: Mirror Worlds
Valor Mortis
Tank Rat
Then came:
10. MURALS
🖌️ ART AS THE WORLD
The name Murals immediately suggests an experience built around visual storytelling.
A mural is traditionally more than a painting.
It can represent:
History.
Culture.
Memory.
Identity.
And a story told through images.
That makes the title particularly intriguing for a video game.
Rather than simply moving through a conventional fantasy or science-fiction setting, Murals appears to place artistic expression at the centre of its identity.
🌍 A NEW IP
Unlike several of the other games appearing in the Pre-Show, Murals isn’t part of a long-running franchise.
It represents a new intellectual property being introduced to the Gamescom audience.
That makes the reveal particularly important.
Gamescom’s Pre-Show isn’t simply looking backwards at established franchises.
It’s also providing smaller and newer projects with an opportunity to reach an international audience.
🎬 THE REVEAL TRAILER
The Gamescom presentation introduced Murals through a dedicated Reveal Trailer.
Rather than being an update to an already released game, this was the audience’s introduction to the project.
That means there is still plenty about Murals that remains to be revealed.
The trailer’s primary purpose was to establish:
The game’s identity
Its visual direction
Its atmosphere
The world players will eventually enter
🧩 A GAME BUILT AROUND DISCOVERY
The concept suggested by the title creates an interesting possibility for storytelling.
Murals can preserve stories.
They can depict events that happened generations earlier.
They can communicate information without spoken dialogue.
And they can change the way players understand the environment around them.
For a game, that opens the door to environmental storytelling where the world itself becomes part of the narrative.
🎨 VISUAL IDENTITY FIRST
One of the most important things a new IP needs is recognition.
Murals has a title that immediately communicates an artistic direction.
That gives the developers an opportunity to build a world in which visual design isn’t simply decoration.
It can become part of the game’s identity.
The art direction could ultimately prove to be one of the project’s strongest distinguishing features.
🔍 QUESTIONS AFTER THE REVEAL
Because Murals was introduced through a reveal rather than a detailed gameplay presentation, several questions remain open.
Players will want to know more about:
The genre
The central gameplay loop
The protagonist
The setting
The role of the murals
Combat or exploration systems
Multiplayer features, if any
The final release platforms
For now, Gamescom has given us the first piece of the puzzle.
📅 2027
The Pre-Show confirmed that Murals is targeting:
2027
That places the game among the longer-term projects introduced during Gamescom 2026.
With more than a year potentially remaining before release, there is plenty of time for the developers to expand on the concept through future trailers and gameplay demonstrations. (PC Gamer)
🌟 WHY MURALS IS INTERESTING
The biggest question surrounding Murals is also its biggest opportunity:
Can art become gameplay?
If murals simply provide the game’s visual style, the concept could remain primarily aesthetic.
But if they become part of exploration, storytelling, puzzles or world-building, the title could develop a much stronger identity.
That’s the aspect we will be watching most closely.
🎮 A DIFFERENT KIND OF GAMESCOM REVEAL
The Pre-Show had already demonstrated that it wasn’t restricted to one particular type of game.
Murals continued that philosophy.
Instead of another established blockbuster, the tenth slot was given to a new project with an immediately recognisable name and visual concept.
It’s exactly the sort of reveal that can disappear beneath the noise of a major showcase — but also the sort of project that can become much more interesting once additional details emerge.

🔥 OUR TAKE
Murals was one of the more intriguing transitions in the Gamescom Pre-Show.
After nine games covering tactics, simulation, creature collecting, mythology, mystery, action and vehicle combat, the presentation introduced something much less immediately defined.
And that can be valuable.
The game doesn’t need to explain everything in its first trailer.
It simply needs to give players a reason to remember its name.
MURALS
Now the developers have to show us what is behind the painting.
