MARIACHI LEGENDS — A MEXICAN FOLKLORE METROIDVANIA WITH A DEADLY TWIST
Mariachi Legends Closes the Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live Pre-Show
Cologne, Germany — August 25, 2026
The Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live Pre-Show reached its final title with one of its most distinctive games of the entire presentation.
The fifteenth and final game shown before the main Opening Night Live was:
MARIACHI LEGENDS
Developed by Halberd Studios, the game combines Mexican folklore, pixel-art visuals and brutal Metroidvania combat.
Its Gamescom appearance also confirmed a release date:
APRIL 27, 2027
🇲🇽 THE FINAL GAME OF THE PRE-SHOW
After fourteen very different games, the Pre-Show concluded with Mariachi Legends.
The chronological lineup had taken viewers through:
Tactical strategy
Train simulation
Theme-park management
Creature adventures
Mythology
Psychological horror
Management and action
Soulslike combat
Vehicle combat
New experimental IP
4X strategy
Science-fantasy action
Cooperative adventure
Samurai action
And finally:
MARIACHI LEGENDS
It was an appropriately unusual way to finish the 15-game showcase.
💀 A DETECTIVE’S JOURNEY INTO THE LAND OF THE DEAD
The protagonist is:
PABLO CRUZ
Pablo is a detective who finds himself drawn into a supernatural conflict.
His journey takes him into the Realm of the Dead, where the boundaries between the living and the dead begin to disappear.
But Pablo is not powerless.
He makes a deal with Lady Death.
And that deal gives him the ability to transform into:
LA SOMBRA
🕶️ BECOME LA SOMBRA
La Sombra is Pablo’s supernatural alter ego.
The transformation is central to the game’s combat system.
As La Sombra, Pablo gains enhanced abilities that allow him to confront the creatures and supernatural forces occupying the Realm of the Dead.
The concept gives the game an immediately recognisable identity:
Detective by day.
Supernatural warrior by night.
⚔️ PIXEL-ART COMBAT
Mariachi Legends is designed as a side-scrolling action game with a strong emphasis on combat.
The game combines:
Metroidvania exploration
Fast melee combat
Platforming
Supernatural abilities
Boss battles
Character progression
The pixel-art presentation gives the game a deliberately retro appearance while the combat is designed for a modern audience.
🗺️ EXPLORE THE REALM OF THE DEAD
The world is structured around interconnected areas.
Players gradually gain new abilities that allow them to reach locations that were previously inaccessible.
This is a fundamental part of the Metroidvania formula.
You discover something you cannot reach.
You continue exploring.
You acquire a new ability.
Then you return.
And suddenly:
The path opens.
🌮 FOOD IS PART OF THE GAMEPLAY
One of the most unusual features highlighted around Mariachi Legends is its cooking system.
Players can prepare traditional Mexican dishes.
These aren’t simply cosmetic collectibles.
Food can provide combat buffs, giving the cooking system a direct gameplay purpose. (GamesRadar+)
That creates an interesting connection between Mexican culture and the game’s mechanics.
Food isn’t simply decoration.
It becomes part of the player’s preparation for battle.
🌶️ CULTURE AS GAMEPLAY
This is one of the game’s strongest distinguishing characteristics.
Rather than using Mexican aesthetics purely as visual decoration, Mariachi Legends attempts to integrate elements of Mexican culture into the experience.
The environments, food, architecture, folklore and characters all contribute to the game’s identity.
That makes the game feel considerably more specific than a generic fantasy Metroidvania.
💀 MEXICAN FOLKLORE MEETS METROIDVANIA
The game’s supernatural world draws heavily from Mexican folklore.
The Realm of the Dead provides the foundation for the adventure, while Lady Death and La Sombra connect the protagonist directly to this mythology.
The result is a combination that feels immediately different from the traditional European gothic influences found in many Metroidvania games.
Instead of another castle filled with vampires and skeletons, players enter a world shaped by:
Mexican folklore.
Death.
Music.
Food.
Colour.
And:
the supernatural.
🎺 WHY THE MARIACHI THEME?
The title isn’t simply a reference to the game’s Mexican setting.
Mariachi culture is incorporated into the game’s broader visual identity.
The developers use the imagery of mariachi musicians alongside the darker supernatural world to create a contrast between celebration and death.
That contrast is one of the reasons the game immediately stands out.
A mariachi-inspired aesthetic isn’t something players encounter often in the Metroidvania genre.
🎨 PIXEL ART WITH A DISTINCTIVE IDENTITY
The pixel-art presentation is one of the game’s most immediately recognisable features.
The developers use detailed environments, expressive character animation and colourful Mexican-inspired locations to create a world that can look vibrant one moment and threatening the next.
This contrast works particularly well with the game’s premise.
The world of the living can feel colourful.
The Realm of the Dead can feel oppressive.
And Pablo exists between the two.
🩸 COMBAT AND PROGRESSION
Combat is designed around increasingly powerful enemies and abilities.
As Pablo progresses, players gain access to new tools that expand both combat possibilities and exploration.
The progression loop therefore follows a familiar Metroidvania structure:
Explore → fight → gain abilities → unlock new areas → discover secrets → become stronger.
The supernatural transformation into La Sombra adds another layer to that system.
👹 BOSSES OF THE DEAD
The Realm of the Dead is filled with supernatural enemies, culminating in larger boss encounters.
These battles are designed to test the player’s understanding of movement, attacks and newly acquired abilities.
As with the rest of the game, the bosses combine traditional action-game design with the visual language of Mexican folklore.
🎮 THE GAMESCOM TRAILER

The game’s distinctive visual style
Most importantly, the trailer confirmed the game’s release date.

🔥 OUR TAKE
Mariachi Legends was an excellent choice for the final position in the Pre-Show.
It is immediately recognisable.
You don’t need ten minutes of explanation to understand its identity.
Mexican folklore.
A detective.
Lady Death.
A supernatural transformation.
A mariachi-inspired world.
Metroidvania combat.
That combination gives Halberd Studios a strong foundation for a game that can distinguish itself in an extremely crowded genre.
The cooking system is another particularly interesting touch.
Using traditional food to provide combat buffs turns cultural representation into an actual gameplay mechanic rather than simply an aesthetic choice. (GamesRadar+)
