Horadric Warden & Penitent: Two New Class Concepts, Illustrated Novels and Skill Trees

Two new heroes. Two forgotten paths. One dark legacy beneath Sanctuary.
The world of Diablo II: Resurrected has inspired generations of players with its unforgettable heroes, ancient mysteries and brutal battles against the forces of darkness. Now, our latest New Format creative project explores two original, unofficial class concepts: Horadric Warden and Penitent.
Developed as part of our expanding Deckard Cain: The Secrets of the Horadrim fan-fiction universe, these classes have evolved beyond character illustrations into detailed class concepts, complete with three skill specialisations each, combat mechanics, character artwork and two illustrated novels.

Horadric Warden — The Guardian of Forbidden Knowledge
Knowledge endures. Order stands.
The Horadric Warden is a scholar-warrior devoted to protecting ancient knowledge and containing powers that should never be unleashed.
Armed with a runic staff, enchanted relics and intricate magical seals, the Warden uses geometric spellcraft to manipulate the battlefield, protect allies and restrain enemies.
Unlike traditional spellcasters, the Warden prioritises preparation, positioning and tactical control.
Three Horadric Warden Skill Trees
1. Seals & Geometry
A specialisation dedicated to magical barriers, battlefield manipulation, runic projectiles and ancient containment rituals.
Featured abilities include Axiom Bolt, Ward Circle, Triune Lattice, Runic Snare, Null Sigil, Binding Prism, Sanctum Array and Seal of Dominion.
2. Relics & Archives
Harness forgotten texts, sacred relics and preserved Horadric knowledge to support allies and unleash devastating magical effects.
Featured abilities include Lantern of Truth, Archivist's Insight, Scribe's Aegis, Tomeburst, Relic Beacon, Memory Vault, Cain's Lesson and Archive Unbound.
3. Bulwark & Judgment
A defensive combat specialisation combining powerful protective magic, staff combat and judgment-based retaliation.
Featured abilities include Staff Crush, Warden's March, Oathplate, Interdiction, Bastion Glyph, Votive Guard, Sentence of Ash and Last Edict.
Illustrated Novel — Horadric Warden: The Seventh Oath
Our first illustrated story volume follows Mara Vey, a young Warden drawn into the mysteries of the First Archive and the dangerous inheritance of the Horadrim.
Her journey explores duty, sacrifice, forgotten history and the question of whether knowledge should always be preserved.
The story incorporates the Warden's abilities into its battles and character development, bringing the class concept to life through narrative fiction.

Penitent — Chains, Fire and Redemption
Through suffering, we are remade.
The Penitent represents a darker, more aggressive path.
A warrior shaped by guilt, sacrifice and an unforgiving past, the Penitent wields heavy chains and burning censers to deliver devastating attacks while transforming suffering into strength.
This original class concept combines close-range combat, fire-based rituals, battlefield control and dangerous self-sacrifice mechanics.
Three Penitent Skill Trees
1. Chains of Penance
Focused on brutal chain attacks, enemy displacement, immobilisation and close-range combat.
Featured abilities include Lash of Contrition, Hook of Remorse, Harrow Chain, Crucible Drag, Binding Scourge, Cage of Sins, Martyr's Reach and Judgment Gallows.
2. Sacred Fire
Transform burning incense, ritual flames and sacred fury into powerful offensive abilities.
Featured abilities include Ember Rite, Censer Burst, Purgation Flame, Ashen Halo, Furnace Heart, Fire Procession, Pyre Sermon and Saint's Immolation.
3. Suffering & Redemption
A high-risk specialisation in which pain, resilience and personal sacrifice become sources of power.
Featured abilities include Self-Flagellation, Vow of Pain, Atoning Guard, Shared Burden, Redemption Pulse, Blood Tithe, Grace Through Agony and Final Penance.
Illustrated Novel — Penitent: The Ashen Vow
The second illustrated story volume follows Corven Ash, a former warrior struggling with the consequences of his past.
His search for redemption leads him into a confrontation with the mysterious Confessor and the remnants of the First Archive.
Set within the same expanding narrative universe as The Seventh Oath, this story examines guilt, responsibility, vengeance and the possibility of forgiveness.

Two Classes, 48 Unique Abilities
Together, the Horadric Warden and Penitent introduce:
Two original character-class concepts
Six distinct skill trees
48 individually named abilities
Specialised combat mechanics and playstyles
Character design sheets and equipment concepts
Illustrated ability and skill-tree artwork
Two interconnected illustrated story volumes
The complete concept also explores how these classes might appear in a Diablo-style character-selection interface alongside established heroes.
These designs are creative proposals, not playable additions to the official game.
Explore the Illustrated Class Collection
The project is designed as a growing digital collection featuring illustrated novels, class lore, concept art, skill-tree illustrations and development materials.
Our planned FileShare collection, Horadric Warden & Penitent — Class Tomes and Illustrated Novels, will bring these materials together in dedicated folders, making the creative development of both classes easier to explore.
The Future of the Project
The publication of these first two illustrated story volumes marks another step in our broader fan-fiction and game-design exploration.
Future development may include expanded class books, additional concept art, deeper gameplay mechanics, cinematic character presentations, new storylines and further exploration of Sanctuary's forgotten history.
Two guardians of a fractured legacy. Two very different paths through darkness. Their stories have only begun.
