GAMESCOM 2026 — WHAT CAN YOU PLAY AT HOME NOW?

Open Betas, Closed Tests, Playtests and Gamescom Demos You Can Try After the Show
Gamescom 2026 may be over, but some of the games shown in Cologne can still be played from home.
One of the best things about Gamescom is discovering that a game presented on stage or playable at the convention is sometimes followed by a public demo, beta or playtest.
We went through the major Gamescom 2026 announcements and the latest developer updates to separate the games that you can actually try from those that were only playable on the show floor.
🟢 OPEN BETAS
Gears of War: E-Day
STATUS: OPEN BETA — CLOSED
The biggest open-beta story connected with Gamescom was:
Gears of War: E-Day
Xbox ran a multiplayer open beta before Gamescom.
However, the beta has already ended, so there is currently no active home beta to join.
This is important because the campaign demo shown at Gamescom was a completely different experience.
The campaign hands-on was playable at the Xbox booth, but Xbox has not released that campaign demo as a downloadable home demo. (gearseday.wiki)
At home:
❌ Open beta — ended
❌ Campaign demo — not publicly downloadable
✅ Full game — October 6, 2026
🔴 CLOSED BETAS
PUBG: DED.NET
STATUS: CLOSED BETA REGISTRATION — OPEN
This is currently one of the most interesting Gamescom registrations.
PUBG: DED.NET
was revealed during Opening Night Live.
It is a first-person multiplayer shooter combining:
FPS combat
PvP
roguelite progression
changing conditions
character abilities
unusual weapons and mechanics
The game is set in a fictional version of 1990s Cascadia.
And most importantly:
CLOSED BETA REGISTRATION IS OPEN.
KRAFTON has opened applications and places are limited. Players register through the official DED.NET website and wait for an invitation. (PC Gamer)
Status:
🟢 Registration open
🔴 Access not guaranteed
🎮 PC / Xbox Series / PS5 planned
📅 Release date: not yet announced
NEW FORMAT VERDICT
Definitely sign up.
This is one of the Gamescom announcements where joining the test early actually makes sense.
🏰 ROCO KINGDOM
STATUS: CLOSED BETA ANNOUNCED
Roco Kingdom is another Gamescom title with a future test confirmed.
The global closed beta is currently targeting:
October 27, 2026
The game combines:
creature collecting
RPG elements
farming
home building
exploration
social multiplayer
more than 400 creatures
The announced target is a late-October 2026 closed beta. (Co-op Pixels)
Status:
🟡 Closed beta planned
📅 Target: October 27, 2026
🎮 PC / PS5 / Xbox Series / mobile
🌊 SEA OF REMNANTS
STATUS: PRE-REGISTRATION OPEN
Sea of Remnants was another Gamescom title offering players the possibility to register ahead of launch.
The game combines:
exploration
sea travel
monsters
puzzles
pirate-city building
adventure/RPG mechanics
Pre-registration is currently available. (Yahoo Tech)
This isn’t the same as an active beta.
So:
🟢 Pre-registration
❌ No confirmed public open beta
❌ No confirmed downloadable demo
🌍 PETIT PLANET
STATUS: PRE-REGISTRATION
HoYoverse’s:
Petit Planet
also appeared during Gamescom.
The game features a colourful social/cozy world with:
character customisation
outfits
activities
exploration
social elements
Players can currently pre-register.
However, pre-registration should not be confused with beta access.
Status:
🟢 Pre-registration
🟡 Future testing possible
❌ No confirmed public downloadable demo
🧪 CHOSEN BY ODIN
Another Gamescom discovery worth watching is:
Chosen by Odin
The developers have been building toward closed playtesting and used Gamescom to introduce the project to a much larger audience.
The team is encouraging players to join its community and participate in future testing.
Status:
🟡 Closed playtest/community registration
🟡 Future tests expected
❌ Not a conventional open beta
The safest way to follow this one is through the game’s official Steam/community channels.
🟡 UPCOMING PLAYTESTS
ORMOD: Directive
This one is particularly interesting.
The developers brought an exclusive Gamescom build featuring content that had not previously been available in their earlier playtests.
But they also explicitly told players who could not attend:
“Upcoming playtest soon after!”
So the Gamescom version itself is not the home demo.
The important part is that another public playtest is planned following the event. (Steam Community)
Status:
🟡 Upcoming playtest
❌ Gamescom-exclusive build at home

🏠 PUBLIC DEMOS YOU CAN PLAY AT HOME
Now for the best part.
Some developers did not keep their Gamescom experience locked to Cologne.
They released demos publicly.
🐕 BARKOUR
STATUS: PLAYABLE NOW
The updated:
Barkour Demo
went live for everyone at the beginning of Gamescom.
The new version includes:
new missions
new locations
updated content
It is publicly available through Steam. (Steam Store)
Verdict:
🟢 PLAY IT NOW
Especially if you missed the Polish-developed game at Gamescom.
⛏️ BERGWERK — A MINING SIM
STATUS: PLAYABLE NOW
This is one of the clearest examples of a Gamescom demo being made available to people at home.
BERGWERK — A Mining Sim
released its demo on Steam during Gamescom.
The developers specifically invited people who could not attend Cologne to play the game from home and provide feedback. (Steam Community)
The game focuses on:
building a mining company
underground exploration
heavy machinery
railway systems
logistics
procedural mining
resource management
Verdict:
🟢 PLAY IT NOW
🏫 HIJINKS HIGH
STATUS: GAMESCOM DEMO AVAILABLE
Hijinks High also released a special Gamescom build designed to recreate the short experience available at the show.
The demo is approximately:
15 minutes
and was specifically created so people could experience the Gamescom version from home. (SteamDB)
Verdict:
🟢 SHORT BUT WORTH TRYING
🌲 WILDERINGS: THE LOST SPRING
STATUS: UPDATED PUBLIC DEMO
The developers brought an exclusive Gamescom build featuring new content.
The Volcano biome was exclusive to the physical Gamescom/PAX version.
However, the developers simultaneously updated the public demo available to everyone.
So you cannot play the exact Gamescom build at home — but you can play an updated version of the public demo. (Steam Community)
Verdict:
🟢 PUBLIC DEMO AVAILABLE
🚗 NEON HYPERDRIVE
STATUS: DEMO AVAILABLE NOW
Neon Hyperdrive released its first public demo on Steam during Gamescom.
The announcement was tied to its appearance at the IGN Awesome Indies presentation.
The demo allows players to experience the game’s:
music-driven worlds
vehicles
gameplay systems
The Gamescom trailer also revealed new soundtrack information. (Steam Store)
Verdict:
🟢 PLAY IT NOW
🎮 CONTROL RESONANT
STATUS: NO HOME DEMO
This is an important one because it was heavily featured at Gamescom.
Control Resonant had a playable Gamescom demo.
But:
There is no downloadable public demo currently available.
The Gamescom hands-on was a physical-only experience.
There is also no announced open beta or closed playtest.
The game is scheduled for release on September 24, 2026. (Control Resonant Guide)
Status:
❌ Home demo
❌ Open beta
❌ Closed beta
✅ Gamescom demo only
🎮 Release: September 24, 2026
👽 ALIEN: ISOLATION 2
STATUS: GAMESCOM DEMO ONLY
One of SEGA’s biggest Gamescom attractions was the first European public hands-on demo of:
Alien: Isolation 2
Unfortunately, this is another example where the show-floor build did not become a downloadable home demo.
The demo was available at SEGA’s Gamescom booth. (Tech Times)
Status:
❌ Home demo currently confirmed
❌ Public beta
❌ Closed beta
✅ Gamescom hands-on
🐺 THE WITCHER 3: SONGS OF THE PAST
STATUS: NO PUBLIC DEMO
CD PROJEKT RED showed the expansion at Gamescom and used REDstreams to discuss it throughout the event.
However, there is currently no public downloadable demo for:
Songs of the Past
The expansion is scheduled for:
2027
So if you see a website claiming to offer a “Songs of the Past beta”, treat it with extreme suspicion.
🚇 METRO 2039
STATUS: NO PUBLIC HOME DEMO CONFIRMED
Metro 2039 was one of the biggest Gamescom games and won:
Best Visuals
But the playable experience was primarily tied to Gamescom.
There is currently no confirmed public home demo or open beta to download.
The game is expected in:
February 2027
⚔️ ONIMUSHA: WAY OF THE SWORD
STATUS: GAMESCOM DEMO / NO CONFIRMED HOME VERSION
Onimusha was one of the strongest Gamescom performers, winning:
Best Gameplay
Best PlayStation Game
But the playable Gamescom version should not be confused with a publicly available home demo.
At present, there is no confirmed public demo equivalent that everyone can simply download.
🧪 ANOMALITH
STATUS: EVENT DEMO — NOT HOME DEMO
ANOMALITH was playable at Gamescom.
The developers have also confirmed upcoming appearances at:
PAX West
and
Tokyo Game Show
with demos at those events. (Steam Community)
That means the Gamescom demo remains primarily an event experience.

🔥 THE FIVE REGISTRATIONS WE WOULD WATCH
If your priority is getting into future tests rather than playing demos:
1. PUBG: DED.NET
Closed beta — register now.
2. Roco Kingdom
Closed beta — target late October.
3. Sea of Remnants
Pre-registration open.
4. Petit Planet
Pre-registration open.
5. ORMOD: Directive
Future playtest announced.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: DEMO ≠ BETA
One of the biggest problems after Gamescom is terminology.
A:
Demo
is usually a limited section of the game that anyone can download and play.
A:
Playtest
is a development build used to collect feedback.
A:
Closed Beta
requires registration and selection/invitation.
An:
Open Beta
is generally available to a much wider audience, although it can still have restrictions.
And:
Pre-registration
does not mean you can play the game yet.
It simply puts you on the list for future access, notifications or launch registration.
🎯 THE GAMESCOM 2026 HOME PLAYLIST

↓
Hijinks High

PLAY LATER.
🔮 THE REAL TAKEAWAY
The most interesting thing about Gamescom 2026 is that the event did not end when the halls closed.
Some games are now entering their beta phase.
Others are preparing public demos.
Others are heading toward release.
And some of the biggest Gamescom titles — such as The Witcher: Songs of the Past, Metro 2039, Alien: Isolation 2 and Control Resonant — are deliberately keeping their full experiences behind the release-date curtain.
So the Gamescom story continues.
THE SHOW IS OVER.
THE TESTING PHASE HAS BEGUN.
AND NOW WE CAN ACTUALLY PLAY.
