Forty years of fantasy — and a new countdown

The first FINAL FANTASY launched in Japan in 1987, beginning a franchise that would influence role-playing games for generations. From memorable characters and extraordinary worlds to iconic soundtracks, the series has repeatedly reinvented itself while retaining its identity.

Square Enix's newly launched teaser website marks the beginning of the road to the 40th anniversary. It does not, by itself, confirm an unannounced mainline title or remake.

A confirmed anniversary exhibition in Tokyo

The Neverending Journeys FINAL FANTASY 40th Anniversary Exhibition has been officially announced for 8 January to 4 April 2027 at the Tokyo National Museum's Hyokeikan. Visitors can expect video, music and interactive experiences celebrating the franchise's history.

What else might Square Enix reveal?

The anniversary naturally raises questions about further game announcements, concerts, remasters, collaborations and collectibles. These are possibilities, not confirmed projects. For now, the official teaser site and the Tokyo exhibition are the strongest clues to the celebration ahead.

More FINAL FANTASY adventures ahead

Square Enix has also announced FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE for October 2026 and FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION for 2027. Both reinforce how active the franchise remains as the milestone approaches; neither should be mistaken for an unannounced surprise teased by the anniversary site.

The journey continues

Forty years of unforgettable adventures deserve a major celebration. Square Enix has opened the door with an anniversary teaser — and fans will be watching closely for whatever comes next. New Format will follow the official reveals throughout 2027.
