DIOXIDE Revealed at Gamescom 2026: A Dark Soulslike FPS Set in an Industrial Dystopia

World Premiere at Future Games Show — Gamescom 2026

The Future Games Show at Gamescom 2026 delivered another surprise with the World Premiere of DIOXIDE, a dark and atmospheric first-person shooter that blends the intensity of a Soulslike with a brutal industrial dystopian setting.

Developed by Byte Barrel, the studio behind Forgive Me Father, DIOXIDE immediately stands out with its grim visual identity, oppressive environments and fast-paced combat.

The Gamescom presentation provided a new look at the world of DIOXIDE and offered the first major introduction to the game for a global audience.

A World Consumed by Industry

DIOXIDE takes players into a dystopian industrial environment where humanity appears to have lost control of the world around it.

Factories, machinery, brutal architecture and hostile environments create an atmosphere that feels deliberately oppressive.

Rather than presenting a traditional fantasy world, DIOXIDE transforms industrial decay into its own form of horror.

The environments are filled with danger, while the visual design creates a constant feeling that something is waiting around the next corner.

From the Creators of Forgive Me Father

Fans of retro-inspired shooters may already recognise the name Byte Barrel.

The studio previously developed Forgive Me Father, a Lovecraftian FPS inspired by classic boomer shooters.

DIOXIDE appears to continue that philosophy while pushing the formula into a darker and more modern direction.

The influence of the studio’s previous work is visible in the aggressive combat, disturbing enemies and emphasis on atmosphere.

A Soulslike FPS

One of the most interesting aspects of DIOXIDE is its combination of genres.

The game is presented as a Soulslike FPS, meaning that traditional first-person shooting is combined with mechanics associated with the Soulslike genre.

This creates the possibility of a much more demanding combat experience than a conventional shooter.

Players can expect to confront dangerous enemies while navigating hostile environments where positioning, timing and resource management could be critical.

The Gamescom trailer also highlighted the game’s weapon-based combat, giving players a first look at how the FPS mechanics fit into its dark world.

The Atmosphere Is One of Its Biggest Weapons

DIOXIDE’s visual identity is immediately recognisable.

The game uses an industrial dystopian aesthetic filled with:

  • Massive industrial structures

  • Dark corridors

  • Heavy machinery

  • Brutalist environments

  • Grotesque enemies

  • Atmospheric lighting

  • Brutal first-person combat

The result is a world that feels less like a traditional shooter arena and more like a hostile environment that players have to survive.

What We Know About the Release

DIOXIDE is currently confirmed for PC via Steam.

A release date has not yet been announced.

The Gamescom 2026 presentation was primarily a reveal, meaning additional information about the game’s story, progression systems, weapons and long-term development plans is expected in future updates.

Why DIOXIDE Is Worth Watching

DIOXIDE enters a particularly interesting part of the FPS market.

Retro-inspired shooters have become increasingly popular, while Soulslike mechanics continue to influence new genres.

Combining these two approaches could give DIOXIDE a distinctive identity.

The key question will be whether Byte Barrel can make the Soulslike mechanics feel natural within a fast-paced first-person shooter.

If the combat, progression and level design come together successfully, DIOXIDE could appeal to both fans of classic boomer shooters and players looking for a more demanding action experience.
