🏆 1. THE TAINTED CUP

Robert Jackson Bennett

Genre: Fantasy / Mystery / Science Fantasy

Published: 2024

Award: World Fantasy Award 2025 — Best Novel

One of the most interesting modern fantasy novels.

The Tainted Cup won the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

This isn’t another:

king + knight + dragon + evil wizard

fantasy.

Instead, Bennett creates a strange empire combining:

• biological technology

• supernatural elements

• political intrigue

• murder mystery

• extremely unusual world-building

The biggest strength is the setting.

It feels like a world that already existed long before the story began.

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers looking for fantasy that feels genuinely different.

🌲 2. THE BOG WIFE

Kay Chronister

Genre: Folk Horror / Dark Fantasy

Published: 2024

A much darker experience.

The Bog Wife combines fantasy, horror and folklore.

At the center is a family bound to an ancient ritual and a mysterious environment.

This isn’t a traditional:

“hero goes into a dungeon and kills a demon”

story.

Instead, it explores:

• family

• inheritance

• nature

• rituals

• violence

• ancient secrets

• generational trauma

The novel was nominated for the 2025 World Fantasy Award.

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers who prefer atmospheric horror and folklore over conventional fantasy.

🦊 3. THE FOX WIFE

Yangsze Choo

Genre: Fantasy / Folklore / Mystery

Published: 2024

A fascinating alternative to traditional European fantasy.

Instead of knights, castles and medieval Christianity-inspired mythology, The Fox Wife draws heavily from East Asian folklore.

Expect:

🦊 fox spirits

👻 supernatural beings

🩸 murder

🌙 legends

🕯️ mystery

🏯 historical settings

The book was also nominated for the 2025 World Fantasy Award.

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers looking for fantasy based on a completely different mythological tradition.

⚔️ 4. THE BRIGHT SWORD

Lev Grossman

Genre: Arthurian Fantasy / Epic Fantasy

Published: 2024

If you enjoy:

• legendary warriors

• magical swords

• kingdoms

• ancient prophecies

• heroes

• battles

• fallen civilizations

this one deserves attention.

Grossman takes the Arthurian legends and builds a new story around them.

The Bright Sword was nominated for the 2025 World Fantasy Award.

⭐ Recommended for:

Fans of legendary heroes and large-scale fantasy.

🪽 5. THE WINGS UPON HER BACK

Samantha Mills

Genre: Dystopian Fantasy / Speculative Fiction

Published: 2024

A very different kind of fantasy.

The story explores:

• religion

• ideology

• social control

• faith

• rebellion

• individual freedom

Rather than focusing on monsters and battles, it uses fantasy to examine how societies are constructed — and how they can control people.

It was also a finalist for the 2025 World Fantasy Award.

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers who want fantasy with strong philosophical and political themes.

🌌 6. THE FAMILIAR

Leigh Bardugo

Genre: Historical Fantasy / Dark Fantasy

Published: 2024

Sixteenth-century Spain.

The Inquisition.

Religion.

Magic.

Secrets.

The protagonist possesses a supernatural ability that she has spent years hiding.

The result is a combination of:

HISTORY + MAGIC + RELIGION + DARK FANTASY

The Familiar was widely recognized among the strongest standalone fantasy novels of the 2024–2025 period.

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers who want realistic historical settings combined with supernatural fantasy.

🩸 7. YOKE OF STARS

R. B. Lemberg

Format: Novella

Genre: Fantasy / Speculative Fiction

Award: World Fantasy Award 2025 — Best Novella

If you’re specifically interested in novellas, this is one of the most important recent examples.

Yoke of Stars won the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella.

It demonstrates how much world-building can be achieved without writing a 700-page epic.

A novella can still contain:

• mythology

• complex characters

• an original world

• philosophical ideas

• conflict

• powerful emotional stakes

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers who want something shorter but still substantial.

🌲 8. THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST

Premee Mohamed

Format: Novella

Genre: Dark Fantasy / Horror

A much more sinister experience.

The forest itself becomes the threat.

Not simply:

“There are monsters in the forest.”

The forest is almost an entity.

The novella was nominated for the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella.

It sits somewhere between:

DARK FAIRY TALE + HORROR + FANTASY

⭐ Recommended for:

Fans of unsettling, atmospheric fantasy.

🕷️ 9. CRYPT OF THE MOON SPIDER

Nathan Ballingrud

Format: Novella

Genre: Horror / Dark Speculative Fiction

Another recent World Fantasy Award nominee.

This is considerably more experimental than conventional epic fantasy.

Don’t expect:

• medieval kingdoms

• armies

• classic demons

• heroic knights

Instead, expect something stranger.

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers who want fantasy/horror that crosses genre boundaries.

⚔️ 10. IN THE SHADOW OF THEIR DYING

Michael R. Fletcher & Anna Smith Spark

Format: Novella

Genre: Grimdark Fantasy

Now we’re getting much closer to the grimdark atmosphere.

Expect:

🩸 Violence

⚔️ War

☠️ Death

🔥 Destruction

🖤 Moral ambiguity

👑 Fallen powers

The novella was nominated for the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella.

⭐ Recommended for:

Fans of brutal, bleak fantasy.

🦅 11. “RAPTOR”

Maura McHugh

Format: Short Story

Award: World Fantasy Award 2025 — Best Short Story

Not every great fantasy story needs to be a novel.

“Raptor” won the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story.

This is important because modern fantasy remains extremely strong in short fiction.

A single story can establish:

• a mythology

• a supernatural threat

• a strange world

• an entire emotional arc

in only a fraction of the length of a novel.

🏚️ 12. THE REFORMATORY

Tananarive Due

Genre: Horror / Supernatural Fiction / Dark Fantasy

Published: 2023

Award: World Fantasy Award 2024 — Best Novel

One of the most important dark supernatural novels of the recent period.

The Reformatory won the 2024 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

The story deals with:

• ghosts

• supernatural forces

• violence

• trauma

• death

• oppression

It is much closer to horror than traditional epic fantasy.

But for readers interested in supernatural dark fiction, it is an essential title.

🌹 13. SAINT DEATH’S DAUGHTER

C. S. E. Cooney

Genre: Dark Fantasy / Epic Fantasy

Published: 2022

Award: World Fantasy Award 2023 — Best Novel

A richly constructed fantasy world with an unusual approach to death, magic and society.

It won the 2023 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

This is closer to traditional fantasy than some of the other titles on this list, but its world-building and dark elements make it worth exploring.

🩸 14. A SUNNY PLACE FOR SHADY PEOPLE

Mariana Enriquez

Format: Short Story Collection

Genre: Horror / Dark Fiction

A collection rather than one continuous fantasy novel.

It won the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Collection.

The stories explore:

• supernatural horror

• death

• violence

• obsession

• ghosts

• disturbing environments

• psychological darkness

⭐ Recommended for:

Readers who prefer many shorter, self-contained dark stories.

🔥 AND WHAT ABOUT 2026?

The current year has already produced more interesting fantasy and horror releases.

Among the recent titles highlighted by major literary coverage are:

A combination of:

apocalyptic fantasy + folk horror + religion + mythology

A particularly interesting choice for readers looking for something darker and more atmospheric.

🌑 THE BIGGER PICTURE

The interesting thing about modern fantasy is that there is no longer one dominant formula.

The genre has fractured into dozens of different directions:

GRIMDARK

Brutality, war, moral ambiguity.

DARK FANTASY

Magic mixed with horror and death.

FOLK HORROR

Ancient rituals, nature and mythology.

GOTHIC FANTASY

Death, haunted places and supernatural mystery.

HISTORICAL FANTASY

Real history combined with magic.

WEIRD FANTASY

Worlds that deliberately reject conventional fantasy rules.

SPECULATIVE FANTASY

Fantasy mixed with science fiction and unusual concepts.

And that is exactly why the current literary landscape is so interesting.

You don’t have to read a 10-book franchise to experience an enormous fantasy world.

Sometimes a single novel is enough.

Sometimes a novella can create an entire mythology in 150 pages.

And sometimes one short story can leave a stronger impression than an entire series.
