BlizzCon 2026 – Everything Blizzard Announced, Revealed and What Comes Next New Format Limited | LIVE FROM BLIZZCON 2026

September 13, 2026
Blizzard is back.
After years of uncertainty surrounding the future of its major franchises, BlizzCon 2026 has opened a new chapter for Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, StarCraft, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm.
And this time, Blizzard did not return quietly.
The 2026 convention has already delivered some of the company’s biggest announcements in years.
A new Diablo game.
A new StarCraft game.
A new era for World of Warcraft.
A new animated Diablo series with Netflix.
Major Overwatch developments.
A new Heroes of the Storm hero.
And much more is still happening across the convention.
New Format is following BlizzCon 2026 through live coverage, separating confirmed announcements from analysis and speculation.
This article will serve as our master report.
Individual announcements will subsequently receive their own expanded New Format articles.
BLIZZCON 2026: THE BIG PICTURE
BlizzCon 2026 is not simply a celebration of Blizzard’s existing games.
It is increasingly looking like a statement about where Blizzard wants to go next.
The company is simultaneously expanding its established games, reviving dormant intellectual properties and pushing its universes beyond gaming.
That combination is particularly important.
For years, the biggest question surrounding Blizzard was whether the company could maintain its existing franchises while creating something genuinely new.
BlizzCon 2026 is providing a very different answer:
Blizzard is attempting to expand in almost every direction at once.
DIABLO V
The Next Era of Sanctuary
One of the biggest announcements of the convention is Diablo V.
Blizzard revealed the next mainline Diablo game during BlizzCon 2026.
The game is currently scheduled for Spring 2029.
The announcement marks the beginning of another major era for one of Blizzard’s longest-running franchises.
Blizzard describes a world in which Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won.
Players become the Heir to Westmarch and travel through a world actively reshaped by Diablo alongside a growing caravan of survivors.
The development team has also revealed the Demon Hunter, Monk and a new Plague Knight class. (PublicNow)
This is not simply another expansion.
It is the next numbered Diablo game.
DIABLO GOES TO NETFLIX
Perhaps even more significant for New Format’s film and television coverage is the confirmation that Diablo is coming to animation.
Blizzard announced a partnership with Netflix to develop a new animated series set in the Diablo universe.
No release date has been announced.
But the announcement is strategically important.
Blizzard president Johanna Faries also indicated that Diablo is only the beginning and that further discussions are taking place around other Blizzard universes. (PublicNow)
This means our earlier coverage of Blizzard’s move toward film and television has now changed from speculation to confirmed development for at least one franchise.
STARCRAFT RETURNS
But Not as StarCraft II
After years of waiting, StarCraft is officially returning.
Blizzard announced STARCRAFT, an original open-world shooter set in the Koprulu Sector.
The project is scheduled for Spring 2030.
Rather than returning as a traditional real-time strategy sequel, Blizzard is taking the franchise in a completely different direction.
Players will take the role of a grunt soldier fighting against the returning Zerg swarm.
No gameplay was shown during the announcement, but Blizzard confirmed the game’s open-world shooter structure. (PublicNow)
This could become one of the most consequential decisions in StarCraft’s history.
WHY STARCRAFT AS A SHOOTER MATTERS
StarCraft has historically been synonymous with real-time strategy.
The original game and StarCraft II helped define competitive PC gaming, particularly in South Korea.
Turning the universe into an open-world shooter therefore represents a major creative departure.
Blizzard is not simply reviving StarCraft.
It is attempting to introduce the universe to a different generation and potentially a much broader audience.
The game is currently targeting 2030.
That means Blizzard is making a long-term investment rather than attempting a quick revival.
WORLD OF WARCRAFT: FOREVER
A New Chapter for Azeroth
World of Warcraft is also entering another major phase.
Blizzard has revealed World of Warcraft: Forever, expanding the long-running Warcraft ecosystem in a direction designed to preserve and continue the game’s enormous legacy.
At the same time, the modern game is moving toward the final stages of the Worldsoul Saga.
The next major Midnight update is Eclipse, which brings players into direct conflict with Xal’atath as the story moves toward The Last Titan. (PublicNow)
This is significant because Blizzard is effectively developing multiple layers of Warcraft’s future simultaneously.
THE LAST TITAN
The Final Chapter of the Worldsoul Saga
Blizzard has also continued preparing the next major stage of the Worldsoul Saga.
The Last Titan will return players to Northrend while reflecting on the history of Azeroth and the characters who shaped it.
Blizzard describes the expansion as the final chapter of the current Worldsoul Saga. (PublicNow)
The importance of this extends beyond one expansion.
The Worldsoul Saga has become one of Blizzard’s largest attempts to create a connected long-term narrative inside World of Warcraft.
WORLD OF WARCRAFT: MIDNIGHT – ECLIPSE
The next major content update for Midnight is Eclipse.
The story places Xal’atath closer to achieving her ultimate objective involving the Worldsoul.
Players will enter the Worldcore and confront the consequences of the ongoing conflict.
Blizzard is positioning Eclipse as a major narrative step toward The Last Titan. (PublicNow)
But Warcraft’s future is not limited to traditional expansion content.
TALEBOUND
Blizzard has also revealed Talebound, a new PvE action-RPG mode coming to World of Warcraft.
The mode turns stories into playable adventures.
Players can explore themed levels, fight enemies and bosses, solve puzzles and collect rewards.
Between adventures, players return to Quillgrave, a mysterious settlement serving as a hub. (World of Warcraft)
This is another example of Blizzard experimenting with different gameplay structures inside its established universes.
OVERWATCH
Ten Years Later
2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Overwatch.
Blizzard used BlizzCon to show what comes next for the franchise.
A new hero has been revealed:
Doctrine.
Doctrine is a vampire-inspired Support hero whose abilities revolve around life-draining mechanics and bat-like drones.
He is arriving as part of Season 5. (PublicNow)
But the hero announcement is only one part of the Overwatch update.
SOMBRA AND ROADHOG
Blizzard is also making major changes to existing heroes.
Sombra is being transformed into a Support character.
Roadhog is receiving a major rework designed to make him more useful to his team.
Blizzard also revealed the new Watchpoint: Grimsvötn map.
These changes indicate that Blizzard continues to substantially rework Overwatch rather than simply adding new characters to the existing formula. (PublicNow)
HEROES OF THE STORM
Xal’atath Enters the Nexus
One of the most surprising announcements concerns Heroes of the Storm.
Blizzard announced that Xal’atath will become the game’s newest hero.
She arrives on September 28, with a PTR release scheduled for September 14.
More importantly, Blizzard hinted that this may not be the end of Heroes of the Storm’s future.
The company explicitly said there may be more to come for the game. (PublicNow)
After years of uncertainty surrounding Heroes of the Storm, that statement is significant.
BLIZZARD IS NOT JUST REVIVING GAMES
The most interesting part of BlizzCon 2026 may be the combination of announcements.
Blizzard has not simply announced:
another expansion.
It has announced:
new games.
new genres.
new characters.
new gameplay systems.
new media partnerships.
new entertainment projects.
This represents a much broader strategy.
STORYTELLING BEYOND GAMING
This may ultimately be the most important announcement for New Format.
Blizzard officially confirmed that it is working with creative partners to bring its universes beyond gaming and onto new screens.
The first confirmed project is the Diablo animated series with Netflix.
But Blizzard’s language suggests that the project is part of something larger.
The company described Diablo as only the beginning.
Blizzard also indicated that discussions are taking place around Warcraft and Overwatch. (PublicNow)
That means the question we have been following for months has now entered a new phase.
FROM WARCRAFT TO DIABLO
For years, Warcraft was the obvious Blizzard property for film and television.
The 2016 movie demonstrated that Azeroth could reach a global cinema audience.
But Diablo may now become Blizzard’s first major new screen project of the modern era.
That is an important distinction.
Instead of immediately returning to live-action Warcraft, Blizzard is beginning with animation.
Animation provides considerably more creative flexibility for a world as visually extreme as Sanctuary.
NETFLIX IS BACK
The Netflix announcement is particularly interesting because of Blizzard’s previous history with the company.
Earlier reported Blizzard projects associated with Netflix did not result in the expected television slate.
The new agreement is therefore not simply a continuation of the previous situation.
It represents a new Netflix–Blizzard relationship.
This time, however, there is an officially confirmed project:
Diablo.
And there is no need to speculate about whether Blizzard is interested in adapting its universes.
It has now publicly demonstrated that it is.
THE MICROSOFT ERA
All of these announcements also need to be understood through Microsoft’s ownership of Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023.
Three years later, Blizzard is presenting one of its most ambitious portfolios of announcements in years.
The company now has access to Microsoft’s wider gaming ecosystem while maintaining its own distinct creative identity.
That combination could become increasingly important as Blizzard expands into new genres and entertainment formats.
2026: THE YEAR BLIZZARD EXPANDED IN EVERY DIRECTION
Look at the announcements together.
Warcraft
New content, Eclipse, The Last Titan and new gameplay experiments.
Diablo
Diablo V, the Amazon for Diablo IV, anniversary content and a Netflix animated series.
StarCraft
A completely new open-world shooter.
Overwatch
New heroes, reworks, maps and continuing story content.
Heroes of the Storm
A new hero and signs of continued support.
Entertainment
Diablo animation with Netflix and further discussions around other Blizzard universes.
This is not a single franchise strategy.
It is a portfolio strategy.

BlizzCon 2026 is not finished.

LIVE REPORT – SEPTEMBER 13
BlizzCon 2026 is still underway.
New Format will continue monitoring official Blizzard announcements, developer panels and major reveals.
As new information becomes available, we will distinguish between:
CONFIRMED
Officially announced by Blizzard.
REPORTED
Information reported by credible sources but not yet formally confirmed.
ANALYSIS
New Format’s interpretation of what the announcement means.
SPECULATION
Potential future developments that remain unconfirmed.
THE BIGGER STORY
The most important story coming out of BlizzCon 2026 may not be one individual game.
It may be the transformation of Blizzard itself.
For years, Blizzard was defined by a small number of enormous franchises.
Now the company is attempting something broader.
It is expanding:
across genres.
across platforms.
across generations.
and beyond gaming.
Diablo is going to Netflix.
StarCraft is becoming an open-world shooter.
Warcraft is moving toward the final chapter of the Worldsoul Saga while experimenting with new gameplay.
Overwatch is entering its second decade.
Heroes of the Storm is showing signs of renewed activity.
And Blizzard is openly talking about bringing more of its universes to screens.
This could be the beginning of the most ambitious period in Blizzard’s history.
NEW FORMAT VERDICT
BlizzCon 2026 is not simply a comeback.
It is a reset.
Blizzard is showing that it still has the ability to surprise its audience.
The next four years could bring:
Diablo V.
StarCraft.
World of Warcraft: The Last Titan.
A Diablo animated series.
And potentially much more.
But the most interesting question is no longer:
“Is Blizzard still capable of creating something new?”
We now know the answer.
The question is:
How far will Blizzard take these worlds?
And New Format will be there to follow every step.
