09 — When the Weather Changes the Show: TGS 2026 and the Reality of Live Events

Excerpt: The cancellation of TGS’s final in-person day was a disruption—and a clear example of how safety must shape large public events.
Tokyo Game Show’s 2026 edition was planned as its longest ever: five days at Makuhari Messe. It became four in-person days after CESA cancelled the Monday 21 September programme as Typhoon No. 25 approached. The organiser said the decision prioritised the safety of visitors, exhibitors and related staff, including their journeys to and from the venue.
The cancellation changed the event’s final chapter. A public day was lost, and people with plans or tickets had to adjust. CESA later announced refunds for tickets for 21 September. Some official programmes and participating companies’ online broadcasts continued, allowing parts of the schedule to reach audiences without bringing people to the venue.
It is tempting to describe this only as a logistical setback. But large events carry responsibilities that are easy to overlook when the focus is on stages, booths and headline announcements. Organisers must consider how thousands of people will travel, whether staff and exhibitors can work safely, and what happens if conditions deteriorate. Those decisions affect fans and businesses alike.
The online continuation also shows why hybrid event planning has become valuable. A stream cannot replace the physical energy of a convention floor, nor can it reproduce the experience of playing a demo beside other fans. It can, however, preserve access to talks, announcements and selected programming when travel becomes unsafe or impossible.
The lesson is not that online and in-person events are interchangeable. It is that the strongest event plans account for both. TGS 2026 did not deliver the five-day physical show it announced, but its response placed safety first and kept some programming available remotely. That is part of the event’s record too—and a practical consideration for every major live gathering.
