Excerpt: TGS’s indie programme put original ideas in the spotlight, with Face UFO taking the SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT 2026 Grand Prix.
Big stages and familiar franchises can dominate a games-show conversation, but some of the most distinctive ideas arrive from smaller teams. TGS built space for those projects through its indie programme and SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT, a competition focused on games with a strong sense of surprise and possibility.
The 2026 Grand Prix went to Face UFO, known in Japanese as Kao UFO. CESA’s results announcement also named awards across categories including design, presentation and experimental work. The programme further recognised Legacy Code, which received both the Best Technological Game Award and Best Arts Award. A separate Pocky Award selected three games from the 151 titles submitted to SELECTED INDIE 80 and SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT, chosen from a creator’s perspective: which projects would be compelling to play and turn into video content?
That last award points to a useful way of thinking about indie discovery. A memorable game does not need the biggest budget or the most elaborate world. It needs an idea that can be understood, felt or shared. A striking mechanic, visual language or playful premise can invite a player to stop scrolling and ask: “What happens if I try this?”
Indie showcases also change the rhythm of an event. They offer a counterpoint to the scale of blockbuster marketing and remind visitors that experimentation is still central to game-making. A prototype or small release can put a fresh mechanic in front of players, then use their reactions to begin a wider conversation.
The awards do not tell us which of these games will become commercial hits, and they should not be treated as a guarantee of future success. They do give curious players a starting point for discovery. If TGS is a place to see what the industry is building, the indie programme is where some of its most unexpected questions are being asked.
