THE DEFIANT — THE GREAT WALL BECOMES A BATTLEFIELD AT GAMESCOM 2026

A forgotten front of World War II takes centre stage in a cinematic new first-person shooter.

At Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, 4Divinity and Hoothanes unveiled a new trailer for The Defiant, a story-driven first-person shooter set during China’s War of Resistance against Japan.

Rather than returning to the familiar battlefields of Normandy or Western Europe, The Defiant focuses on the Asian theatre of World War II, with the new Gamescom footage placing players in the middle of a desperate defence of the Great Wall of China in 1942.

The result is a war game built around resistance, survival and the human cost of conflict.

🇨🇳 A DIFFERENT SIDE OF WORLD WAR II

World War II games have repeatedly explored the same historical locations.

The Defiant takes a different approach.

Its story focuses on China’s resistance against the Japanese invasion, a conflict that lasted for years and caused enormous losses among soldiers and civilians.

The developers want the game to introduce this comparatively underrepresented part of the war to an international gaming audience.

The setting therefore isn’t simply a visual change.

The historical perspective is part of the game’s identity.

🧱 THE GREAT WALL — 1942

The Gamescom trailer immediately establishes the scale of the conflict.

Chinese soldiers occupy a battered position on the Great Wall, surrounded by smoke and explosions.

The defensive position comes under heavy attack as enemy forces attempt to break through.

The soldiers have to hold their ground while the battlefield rapidly deteriorates.

The footage ultimately turns the Great Wall into something more than an iconic landmark.

It becomes a desperate military position.

⚔️ “WE ARE THE GREAT WALL”

The trailer’s imagery builds toward a simple but powerful idea:

The wall isn’t only made of stone.

The soldiers defending it become the wall themselves.

As the attack intensifies, the defensive line begins to collapse into close-quarters combat, with soldiers fighting on the ramparts at extremely close range.

The trailer closes on the game’s central statement:

The Defiant.

The title refers not simply to the soldiers themselves, but to their refusal to surrender.

🎮 A STORY-DRIVEN FPS

The Defiant is being developed as a single-player, cinematic first-person shooter.

Rather than focusing exclusively on large-scale firefights, the campaign combines action with stealth, espionage and investigation.

The game’s official materials describe missions involving:

🔫 Close-quarters combat

🥷 Stealth infiltration

🎯 Sniping

🕵️ Urban espionage

🔐 Code-breaking

🚙 Vehicular combat

💥 Large-scale assaults

This means the player won’t always know where the next battle is coming from.

🥷 THERE ARE NO CLEAR FRONTLINES

One of the defining ideas behind The Defiant is the nature of guerrilla warfare.

The conflict isn’t presented as two armies simply standing opposite each other.

Instead, players operate behind enemy lines and move through occupied territory.

A mission can begin quietly before suddenly becoming a full firefight.

A stealth operation can turn into a desperate escape.

A reconnaissance mission can become a fight for survival.

The battlefield is constantly changing.

🌲 THROUGH OCCUPIED CHINA

The campaign takes players through a range of environments rather than keeping the entire game inside one location.

The developers have described:

🌾 Occupied villages

🌲 Frozen forests

🏭 Enemy-controlled urban areas

🚧 Fortified supply routes

🏯 Historic locations

Each environment is designed to reflect a different aspect of the conflict and the realities of fighting behind enemy lines.

The Gamescom trailer’s Great Wall sequence therefore represents only one part of a much larger journey.

🔫 HISTORICAL WEAPONS

Weapons are another important element of the game’s authenticity.

Rather than creating an arsenal that simply resembles generic World War II firearms, the developers have specifically highlighted weapons associated with China’s wartime history.

These include:

  • Hanyang Rifle

  • Mauser Military Pistol

  • MP18 submachine gun

  • Other historically inspired firearms

The intention is to treat these weapons as part of the historical setting rather than simply as gameplay statistics.

🎯 STEALTH, SNIPING AND CLOSE COMBAT

The Gamescom footage suggests that combat can take several forms.

Players can approach situations quietly, using stealth to avoid detection.

Alternatively, they can engage enemies at range with a rifle or sniper weapon.

And when everything goes wrong, the game can transition into close-quarters firefights.

That variety is important because it prevents the experience from becoming a straightforward corridor shooter.

🔐 ESPIONAGE AND PUZZLES

Combat isn’t the only way players will interact with the world.

The Defiant incorporates espionage and code-breaking operations, giving the campaign moments where observation and problem-solving become as important as shooting.

This creates a broader gameplay loop:

INFILTRATE → INVESTIGATE → DECODE → ESCAPE → FIGHT

🎬 A CINEMATIC APPROACH

The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 by a team with experience spanning both filmmaking and game development.

That background is reflected in the game’s presentation.

The developers are aiming for a cinematic experience while keeping the focus on individual soldiers and the emotional consequences of war.

The Gamescom trailer reflects that philosophy.

Instead of presenting the conflict purely as spectacle, it focuses on soldiers under pressure and the relationships between people fighting alongside one another.

❤️ THE HUMAN SIDE OF RESISTANCE

At its core, The Defiant is intended to be about more than military victories.

The developers describe the game’s central themes around:

Survival.

Identity.

Resistance.

Homeland.

The goal is to show what happens to ordinary people caught inside an enormous conflict.

That makes the title’s name particularly appropriate.

The characters aren’t superheroes.

They’re people attempting to resist overwhelming circumstances.

🏹 THE GREAT WALL SEQUENCE

The Gamescom trailer’s most memorable sequence takes place on the Great Wall.

Chinese soldiers attempt to maintain their defensive position while artillery and enemy forces overwhelm the area.

The environment begins to collapse.

The fighting becomes increasingly close.

And eventually, the battle becomes almost entirely about survival.

The sequence gives The Defiant a clear identity within the crowded WWII shooter genre:

This isn’t a story about an unstoppable soldier.

It’s a story about people trying not to break.

🎥 FROM FILMMAKERS TO THE BATTLEFIELD

Hoothanes is developing The Defiant using Unreal Engine 5, with a team combining filmmaking and game-development experience.

That combination is particularly visible in the game’s cinematic presentation.

The developers are attempting to create scenes that feel like historical war cinema while still giving the player direct control over the action.

🌏 WHY THE SETTING MATTERS

The Asian theatre of World War II remains comparatively underrepresented in mainstream games.

By placing China’s War of Resistance at the centre of the campaign, The Defiant has an opportunity to introduce players to a different historical perspective.

The developers have explicitly positioned the game as an attempt to bring this chapter of the war to a global audience.

That makes the game interesting not simply because of its gameplay, but because of which story it chooses to tell.

🎬 WHAT THE GAMESCOM 2026 TRAILER SHOWS

The new trailer gives us a concentrated look at the game’s tone and setting.

We see:

🇨🇳 Chinese resistance fighters

🧱 The Great Wall in 1942

💥 Heavy bombardment

🔫 Infantry combat

🎯 Rifle combat

⚔️ Close-quarters fighting

🌫️ War-torn environments

🔥 A collapsing defensive position

The presentation makes the stakes immediately clear: hold the line or be overrun.

🖥️ PLATFORMS

The Defiant is planned for:

🎮 PlayStation 5

🎮 Xbox Series X|S

🖥️ PC via Steam

The game is currently listed without a confirmed release date, so players will have to wait for further information from 4Divinity and Hoothanes.

🔥 WHY THE DEFIANT DESERVES ATTENTION

The WWII FPS genre has some enormous names.

That’s precisely why The Defiant needs something different.

Its strongest feature may not be its weapons or graphics.

It’s the decision to tell a story from a less frequently represented theatre of the war.

Combine that with:

🎬 Cinematic storytelling

🎮 Tactical FPS gameplay

🥷 Stealth

🔐 Espionage

🎯 Sniping

🚙 Vehicular combat

🇨🇳 Chinese wartime history

🧱 The Great Wall

and The Defiant begins to look like something more distinctive than another conventional WWII shooter.

🧱 WE ARE THE WALL

The Gamescom 2026 trailer leaves a powerful impression.

A historic monument stands under attack.

The soldiers defending it know they may not survive.

Yet they remain at their positions.

They fight.

They resist.

And when the physical wall begins to fail, the soldiers themselves become its final line of defence.

THE DEFIANT

🇨🇳 Experience China’s War of Resistance.

🎯 Fight from the shadows.

🥷 Infiltrate enemy positions.

🔐 Break codes and uncover information.

🔫 Use historically inspired weapons.

🧱 Defend the Great Wall.

The Gamescom 2026 trailer has given The Defiant a powerful introduction — not as another familiar WWII battlefield, but as a story about a part of the war rarely placed at the centre of a major FPS.
