GAMESCOM 2026 — 16:30 UPDATE

The Final Afternoon: New Discoveries, Future Games and the Stories We Are Still Watching
Cologne, Germany — August 30, 2026
Gamescom 2026 is entering its final hours.
The exhibition remains open until 20:00 CEST, but by this point the story of Gamescom has already become much bigger than the announcements made during Opening Night Live.
Across the week, developers have shown playable builds, publishers have revealed release plans, creators have discussed what is coming next, and several games have emerged as potential major releases for 2027 and beyond.
And some of the most interesting stories are not necessarily the games that dominated the headlines on Tuesday night.
This is our latest New Format Gamescom 2026 Update.
🔥 THE BIGGEST STORY: GAMESCOM IS LOOKING BEYOND 2026
One of the clearest messages coming out of Cologne is that the industry’s pipeline is increasingly moving beyond the immediate release calendar.
Gamescom 2026 has featured games scheduled for:
late 2026
2027
2028 and beyond
That makes this year’s show particularly interesting.
It isn’t simply a showcase of games that are about to launch.
It is becoming a preview of the next generation of major releases.
🧙 THE WITCHER 3 ISN’T FINISHED YET
One of the biggest surprises of Gamescom 2026 was the decision by CD PROJEKT RED to return to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The studio revealed new information about:
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past
and announced a Remastered edition.
The expansion is planned for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. CD PROJEKT RED says the new expansion adds another chapter to Geralt’s story. (CD PROJEKT RED Press Center)
This is particularly significant because The Witcher 3 originally launched in 2015.
More than a decade later, CD PROJEKT RED is still using the game as an active part of its portfolio.
And that raises an obvious question:
How much longer can The Witcher 3’s story continue?
The company has not announced another major post-Songs of the Past expansion.
For now, that means 2027 is the next major Witcher 3 milestone.
🚇 METRO 2039 IS ONE OF THE GAMES TO WATCH
Another major Gamescom story is:
METRO 2039
The new Metro project was one of the most heavily nominated games at the Gamescom Awards, receiving five nominations — the highest total of any game.
It ultimately won:
🏆 Best Visuals
The game is also playable at Gamescom, giving visitors a chance to experience the new Metro project rather than simply watching a trailer. (gamescom)
That distinction matters.
A trailer can create excitement.
A playable build can create confidence.
And Metro is now one of the games worth watching closely as we move into the post-Gamescom release cycle.
⚔️ ONIMUSHA HAS BECOME AN AWARD-WINNING CONTENDER
Capcom’s:
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
has had one of the strongest Gamescom 2026 campaigns.
It won:
🏆 Best Gameplay
🏆 Best Sony PlayStation Game
That puts Onimusha in a particularly interesting position.
It isn’t simply another upcoming Capcom game.
Gamescom has effectively identified it as one of the strongest playable experiences of the show.
And with the title also appearing prominently in Future Games Show coverage, its Gamescom presence has been unusually extensive. (gamescom)
👽 ALIEN: ISOLATION 2 CONTINUES TO GROW
Another game attracting serious attention is:
ALIEN: ISOLATION 2
The sequel has been one of the strongest performers at the Gamescom Awards.
It won:
🏆 Best Audio
and received multiple nominations.
SEGA’s Gamescom lineup also placed Alien: Isolation 2 alongside major titles including Persona 4 Revival and Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. (gamescom)
The interesting part is what the award tells us.
The sequel isn’t being discussed simply because it carries the Alien name.
Its sound design and atmosphere are becoming major parts of its identity.
For survival-horror fans, this is now one of the Gamescom games worth keeping on the radar.
🏎️ XBOX IS ALREADY LOOKING TOWARDS THE NEXT GENERATION OF ITS LINEUP
Xbox’s Gamescom presence is enormous.
The official Xbox booth contains:
25 playable games
across:
140 gaming stations
The lineup includes:
Gears of War: E-Day
Fable
Forza Horizon 6
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
Metro 2039
Alien: Isolation 2
Halo: Campaign Evolved
Minecraft Dungeons II
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
and others. (XBOX Wire)
That is important because Xbox isn’t presenting a single flagship game.
It is presenting an ecosystem of upcoming releases.
🏆 FORZA HORIZON 6 WINS THE XBOX CATEGORY
One of the clearest results from Gamescom Awards is:
Forza Horizon 6
🏆 Best Microsoft Xbox Game
The title competed against major Xbox releases including Gears of War: E-Day, Halo: Campaign Evolved and Metro 2039. (gamescom)
That makes Forza Horizon 6 one of the games that has successfully translated its Gamescom presence into formal recognition.
🧩 FUTURE GAMES SHOW — THE SECOND WAVE OF GAMESCOM
The main Gamescom announcements weren’t the end.
The Future Games Show at Gamescom delivered more than 40 game presentations, including numerous world premieres.
Among the games shown were:
Worms: Galactic Tactics
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival
Wolcen II
Serious Sam: Shatterverse
SPINE
Star Wars: Galactic Racer
PixelJunk Monsters 3
AION 2
Star Trek: Outposts Unknown
WARDOGS
DNA Nemesis
Kingdom 3: Rising Realms
Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern
NO LAW
Ritual Tides
Escape from Playtime
Bye Bye Bonnie
Breakaway Hockey League
Last Ditch Effort
The show also included games such as Hillthorn, The Journey Home and Into the Wind. (GamesRadar+)
For New Format, this is particularly important because Future Games Show is effectively another large Gamescom catalogue that needs to be tracked separately from Opening Night Live and Awesome Indies.
🌎 THE FUTURE GAMES SHOW ISN’T FINISHED YET
There is still another piece of FGS coverage scheduled for today:
FGS Best of Gamescom
The programme is designed to revisit the biggest games from the show floor with:
gameplay demonstrations
booth tours
developer interviews
additional Gamescom coverage
The Future Games Show team has specifically teased developer interviews with teams behind My Time at Evershine and Arizona Sunshine. (Nitter)
So even though the main FGS presentation is over, Gamescom’s digital coverage is still producing new material today.
🕵️ RUMOURS & LEAKS — WHAT ACTUALLY DESERVES ATTENTION?
This is where we need to separate confirmed information from speculation.
Gamescom 2026 generated several pre-show rumours, including claims about potential Xbox announcements and a possible new LEGO project.
Those rumours should not be treated as confirmed announcements unless the publisher has officially announced them.
For example, pre-Gamescom reporting suggested Microsoft could reveal an unannounced first-party game developed externally. The claim was attributed to insider speculation rather than an official Xbox announcement. (Notebookcheck)
Similarly, reports suggested that a new LEGO game could potentially appear during Gamescom. That remained a rumour, rather than a confirmed reveal. (VICE)
Our rule at New Format:
CONFIRMED ≠ LEAKED ≠ RUMOURED
We will keep those categories separate.
That matters because Gamescom is one of the easiest events for speculation to become mistaken for fact.
🧟 RESIDENT EVIL — THE STORY THAT DIDN’T MATERIALISE
Another example is Capcom.
Before Gamescom, rumours circulated that Capcom could reveal another trailer for:
Resident Evil Veronica
at the event.
The report was explicitly presented as a rumour. (VICE)
Capcom has separately confirmed that Resident Evil Veronica is planned for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. (Notebookcheck)
But that does not mean that the rumoured Gamescom trailer happened.
This is exactly why the post-show period is useful:
we can now separate what was predicted from what was actually shown.
🧱 THE LEGO QUESTION
The LEGO rumour is another interesting case.
Before Gamescom, reports suggested that a new LEGO project could be revealed.
The possibility generated attention because LEGO has become one of gaming’s most recognisable crossover brands.
But without an official announcement, we should treat the story as:
🟡 RUMOUR
rather than:
🟢 CONFIRMED
If the project is real, Gamescom may simply have been too early for its announcement.
And that leads to one of the bigger lessons from this year’s event:
Not every rumoured game needs to appear at Gamescom.
Some announcements are deliberately being held for later showcases.
🔮 WHAT COULD HAPPEN AFTER GAMESCOM?
The gaming calendar does not stop here.
Gamescom is effectively the beginning of the final stretch of 2026.
And several major events are still ahead.
The next months could bring:
September
More publisher announcements and Tokyo Game Show coverage.
Autumn 2026
New release dates, gameplay demonstrations and marketing campaigns for 2027 games.
December
The Game Awards 2026
This is where Gamescom’s biggest winners and announcements could receive another wave of attention.
🏆 GAMESCOM → THE GAME AWARDS
Gamescom Awards and The Game Awards are not the same thing.
But Gamescom can serve as an important early indicator.
Games such as:
METRO 2039
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Tides of Annihilation
Forza Horizon 6
Alien: Isolation 2
and other major titles have now had significant exposure in front of the gaming community.
That doesn’t automatically make them TGA nominees.
But their Gamescom reception gives us an early indication of which games could remain part of the conversation when awards season arrives.
🌟 THE INDIE SCENE IS STILL ONE OF GAMESCOM’S BIGGEST STORIES
One thing has become particularly clear throughout the week:
Gamescom 2026 isn’t only about AAA.
The show has created enormous space for independent developers.
Awesome Indies has already provided New Format with a major catalogue of indie games.
Future Games Show has added another wave.
The Indie Arena Booth is still active today.
And the FYNG programme is dedicating an entire afternoon to indie discoveries and the FYNG Indie Award.
This is important because some of the most interesting games of the next few years may not come from the biggest publishers.
🏙️ GAMESCOM HAS BECOME A CITY-WIDE EVENT
At this point, Gamescom is also happening outside the convention centre.
The gamescom city festival continues across Cologne today with live performances.
The festival’s programme runs through August 30, adding a completely different layer to the final day. (gamescom)
Inside the halls:
games
developers
publishers
creators
esports
cosplay
Outside:
music
performances
fans
Cologne
Gamescom has effectively become a city-wide entertainment event.
📈 ONE OF THE BIGGEST GAMESCOMS YET
The scale of this year’s event has also been one of its stories.
Gamescom 2026 reached a new milestone with all available exhibition areas booked, while more than 1,700 exhibitors are participating across the event. (gamescom)
That scale explains why it is almost impossible to cover every game from a single presentation.
And it also explains why the New Format Gamescom project has become so large.
We are not covering one show.
We are covering an entire gaming ecosystem.
🔥 THE GAMES WE ARE WATCHING AFTER GAMESCOM

⏳ 20:00 IS NOT REALLY THE END
At 20:00, the public exhibition will close.
But the Gamescom story won’t.
The next stage will be:
reviews
hands-on impressions
developer interviews
release-date analysis
technical analysis
new trailers
sales expectations
award-season predictions
and eventually:
Which Gamescom games will actually live up to the hype?
📝 NEW FORMAT — NEXT STEP

Instead, we’ll identify the genuinely missing stories.
🔥 GAMESCOM 2026 — THE FINAL HOURS
The show floor is still alive.
The final demos are being played.

2028 is beginning to appear on the horizon.
