Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern Revealed at Gamescom 2026
A New Fantasy Life Simulator Invites Players Behind the Tavern Counter
The Future Games Show at Gamescom 2026 delivered another World Premiere with the reveal of Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern, a completely different take on the legendary D&D universe.
Developed by Dotemu, the game moves away from traditional dungeon crawling and puts players behind the counter of a fantasy tavern.
Instead of fighting monsters, players will be responsible for feeding, entertaining and taking care of the adventurers who return from their dangerous journeys.
Welcome to the Long Rest Tavern
Every great D&D adventure needs somewhere for heroes to rest.
Long Rest Tavern turns that idea into the foundation of an entire game.
Players will operate their own fantasy tavern, serving adventurers, managing the establishment and dealing with the unexpected situations that come with running a business in a world full of heroes, monsters and magic.
The result is a much more relaxed interpretation of the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
A Different Kind of D&D Adventure
Rather than controlling a traditional party of adventurers, players become the people responsible for providing them with a place to recover.
The game combines elements of:
Life simulation
Tavern management
Fantasy role-playing
Resource management
Character interaction
Customisation
This gives Long Rest Tavern a very different identity from the combat-heavy D&D games players may be familiar with.
Heroes Need Somewhere to Rest
The central idea is simple but effective.
Adventurers spend their days fighting monsters, exploring dangerous locations and completing quests.
When they return, they need somewhere to recover.
That is where the Long Rest Tavern comes in.
Players will need to create an environment capable of attracting different kinds of fantasy heroes while keeping the tavern running successfully.
The guests themselves become an important part of the experience.
Their personalities, needs and stories can create unexpected situations behind the tavern doors.
Building Your Own Fantasy Business
Long Rest Tavern is not simply about serving food and drinks.
Players will be able to develop and customise their establishment, gradually transforming a modest tavern into a popular destination for adventurers.
The management side of the game introduces another layer of strategy.
Players must consider how to spend their resources, how to improve the tavern and how to keep customers satisfied.
The fantasy setting gives the developers plenty of opportunities to introduce unusual characters, magical objects and situations that would be impossible in a traditional management simulator.
The World of Dungeons & Dragons
The biggest attraction may ultimately be the setting itself.
Dungeons & Dragons has decades of established fantasy lore, races, creatures and character archetypes.
Long Rest Tavern can use that enormous universe from a completely different perspective.
Instead of asking:
“Can we defeat the monster?”
the game asks:
“What does the adventurer need after defeating the monster?”
That change in perspective is what makes the project particularly interesting.
A Cosy Side of Fantasy
The trailer presented a much warmer and more colourful side of the D&D universe.
Rather than dark dungeons and enormous battles, Long Rest Tavern focuses on the social environment surrounding adventurers.
The tavern becomes a meeting place where stories, characters and different fantasy personalities come together.
That could make the game particularly appealing to players who enjoy the world-building and role-playing elements of D&D but prefer a more relaxed gameplay experience.
Developed by Dotemu
Dotemu is developing Long Rest Tavern.
The studio is known for games including Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, demonstrating considerable experience with stylised games based on established entertainment properties.
Long Rest Tavern represents a significant change of direction from those action-focused titles.
Release Information
Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern is scheduled to launch on PC in early 2027.
An exact release date has not yet been announced.
More information about gameplay systems, customisation, progression and the range of characters appearing in the tavern is expected in future updates. (GamesRadar+)
Why Long Rest Tavern Is Worth Watching
D&D has traditionally been associated with adventure, combat, exploration and dungeon crawling.
Long Rest Tavern takes a different approach.
It focuses on the quieter moments between adventures — the conversations, friendships, business decisions and personalities that make a fantasy world feel alive.
That could give Dotemu an opportunity to create something much more character-driven than a conventional D&D adaptation.
The combination of:
Dungeons & Dragons + tavern management + life simulation + fantasy characters
is certainly unusual.
And sometimes the most unexpected ideas become the most memorable games.
